Reputation System Change:

Hi all,
Just wanted to quickly update you.

We have just crossed the halfway mark in the 60 day trial of the reputation system.

For the remaining half - we have removed negative reputation votes. We have a fairly good idea of how the system is used when we have it enabled, and now just want to try without it aswell.

We will have a feedback thread posted in the coming weeks so you guys can leave your thoughts on the system as a whole.

By removed you simply cannot see them?

I have the option to downvote your post, not that I want to but I figured that would disappear?

Great news - I'm sure a lot of forumers on the HD side will be content with this change.

It will be interesting to see what effect removing negative votes will have across the forum.

Per Mod Holps, it's now possible to hide your Reputation Points via General Settings. I'm hiding my Rep for the next 24 hours and you shouldn't be able to see my Reputation Tab and upvote my posts.

Cloaking device has been engaged. All hands, silent running. :)

I can only up-vote now, last night moments after seeing this thread I could still see both.

Maybe the admins didn't complete the change on their end at the time, or I had a cookie issue showing old stuff.

I will be more open to this experiment with only up-votes. I'm still not convinced it's a good thing, but at least haters can't hate from the shadows anymore, which is just toxic.

Thank you CottonTail for the notification. I needed to go to General Settings to "Show Reputation" to see your most recent upvote of my post.

I would support downvotes as long as the recipients see who's sending them. Downvoting anonymously will be too tempting to some readers who lack self-restraint, IMHO.

It could still cause issues IMO if that was the case, would you want to know if a member or two were voting you down? It could then turn into a 'well if you downvote me, I'll downvote you back'. Potentially very childish and counter productive to the generally peaceful forum we share.

I have weighed knowing against not knowing and determined that not knowing will create some poison pen writers. Why should some posters be allowed to hide their identities while posting negative feedback? When I do so publicly, I want the recipients to know I'm the writer.

I wrote over one thousand posts in the subforums, most of them in the HD subforum and received negative feedback publicly and privately. Many of the feedback are constructive criticism of my viewpoints and persuaded me to change them. I don't remember any of the authors and never considered a "well, you posted negative feedback on my posts, so I'll surely remember and do the same to you in the future" policy.

I agree that downvoting may lead to revenge voting. But as long as the identities of the voters aren't hidden, we can determine if a specific voter is engaging in revenge voting and dismiss his or her negative feedback.

P.S. I'm changing my General Settings to "Show Reputation" once again so everyone can access my Reputation Tab and read the feedback for my recent posts. Disengaging cloaking device. :)
