I prefer having the negative comments removed. I think negative feedback should be left to the mods, because otherwise you sometimes collect negative feedback only because someone does not share your opinion (for example on things like engineering).

I don't like the system but I don't use it so what do I know lol.
Take a chill pill peeps. Like Lach mentioned it's just a trial. We'l get to know whether we get to keep the downvote thing after the trial period ends.
this was a good move... let the forum mods give down votes for putting topics in the wrong area after a warning.. that would help
This thread so far proves what neg rep does: Starts negetive squabling. Good riddence to encouraging negativity with neg rep. No one needs practice in being negative - comes natural to hoomins. No need to drag real life onto this forum. Why not have a postive place instead? People who absolutely must be negative can go outside and pick fights with passers-by. Then at least their insatiable desire for "real life balance" will be eagerly satiated, hopefully by someone bigger than them. There is no "real life" online, don't make believe there ever was or ever will be.
Now then... as already mentioned by previous poster... what's up with "given out too much rep try again in 24hrs"? Something needs to be done. The requirement to intersperse re-reps with 15 new reps is probably enough.
SMAEL is absolutely correct. I have received FAR more upvotes from people agreeing with me than downvotes from people disagreeing with me.
On a somewhat related note, would it possibly help to set a higher floor for allowing people to downvote? While you need 10 points to upvote (or, as it stands now, to vote at all), you need, say, 50 to downvote. This keeps downvoting in place, which I still believe is important, while restricting it to posters who have shown that they can make worthwhile contributions. I'm not saying that directly correlates to understanding when and why downvoting is appropriate, but I think it would be a start. I'm willing to bet that anyone who has so far abused negative rep votes (meaning deliberately so) has fewer than 25 points.
Do you think that for as many people who would down rep someone for comments against engineering, just as an example, there aren't as many or more who would up rep it, as long as it is respectful and reasonably stated? Is it not possible too to have people who disagree up vote based on post quality and thoughtfulness too?
Even if it isn't being observed to be working this way, which it is, just the basic law of averages should make it work itself out.
So what exactly are you basing your opinion on? Please expand.
