My opinion the reputation system was implemented to take some of the work load off mods. It was intended to be a self policing system. Don't understand how you all didn't know it would make it harder job.
All of you were forum members before accepting the mod title there is no way you didn't know how much work was involved. Some are better at handling stress than others. The stress is making some break rule #1 & 17.

I'm noticing a problem with negative reps. Does anyone else think it's a problem that a single bad post/ thread can drop a person well below the point of no return? Recent thread I saw has OP with 6 down votes and likely counting. Not the end of the world or insurmountable in time but is pretty damaging, especially if the poster was newer to forums, or younger.
I still see this system as working poorly once the next hot button thread or update emerges, this just seems like more proof of it.

It happened as I expected. The rep system has cleaned the forums a little bit, but it has also opened up numerous ways for trolls to discourage genuine and helpful forumers by downvoting them for nothing. Too bad.Quote:

IMO, the FRS isn't gonna make it past the 60 day trial period. I'm saying this because a lot of people have been facing flak recently because of it and I'm one of them. Due to the FRS, I can't even post my opinion freely due to the fear of being downvoted so much that I'll have to quit the forums. Recently I've been downvoted very often, even though I haven't made a single toxic comment till date and I've been polite to everyone on the forums. I know some people (I'm not referencing to anyone here) who are always ready to rebuke other people irrespective of their contribution to the forums. I rest my case here. Moderators will give you those when you have been reported for bad behaviour, or the mods themselves deem it bad enough to deserve one. When you get 5 you are banned from forums. Why are mods getting so defensive and rude when members call them out on things we disagree with? My opinion of a mod is someone who should lead by example! I used to be a mod on another site years ago, we kept that feature (negative Rep) for mods only. As it gets abused. Which it is.
It's mostly used to weed out those that are being toxic, or at least that's what I mainly use it for.
Maybe it is not about what you say but rather how you say it. If you believe yo do not deserve it the mods can neutralise it if I understood correctly

I believe it is a trial still at this stage and it may need tweaking a bit, but if it helps the mods to identify and weed out the toxic trolls, then I think it could prove to be positive. You never know it might encourage some people to grow up a bit rather than hiding behind a keyboard with no fear of retribution.

It does seem like the downvote is getting abused. I've only downvoted one person, but thay was because he was name calling a few players.(I reported as well) I really wish that people would only use the downvote for borderline toxic posts. It's even crazier that people will talk about the downvote and people upvote solely to counter the downvotes.
Yup, give people power and it will be abused. I agree with OP completely that negative rep should be removed. Positive rep is harmless, but probably meaningless too.
Question for mod/SC is what's the purpose of the system? Are you gathering stats for some type of profiling purpose?
I'm mainly active in the CR part of the forum and I think it's working great over there. I feel like the toxicity has gone back and a lot more people try to answer questions or help others out. Downvoting needs a reason and I think if there is none, mods can reverse it. Also revenge downvoting is against the rules and can lead to a ban. I guess if its getting abused a lot negative rep can be disabled by the modsQuote:

I've been in the Forum for a while and it looks to be a lot less prone to trolls, needless toxicity, and personal attacks now.
The best thing we can do is just be honest and civil in our opinions and not let the rep system alter them. If we had a tendency to be toxic or attack posters personally, we need to find a way to control being baited and get our point across without starting a flame war. Simple as that. In the real world, there is a reputation system and it seems to work ok.
I believe the positives are far outweighing any negatives, no pun intended.
downvote if you feel someone is toxic or rude - this is better than geting into it on the thread and flame waring it. I think the downvoted will allow people to downvote and move on, and so we should get less flamewars. I think this system is great. It gives everyone a chance to show how reputable they are. Before that I was mostly looking at the post count and title associated, which is a poor way to show how reputable you are as anyone can spam useless posts all day. At the same time is is discouraging toxic behaviour, to me it a win win.
There are plenty of trolls who are gonna use this system to their trolling advantage, but I feel that there are a lot less trolls then the rest of us and they are droping like flys.
