Introducing: The Forum Reputation System

The challenge for me isn't detecting posts which may have violated forum rules and must be reported to the Mod Squad for review. It's when I read posts which I perceived as coming close to crossing the line. Then I must consider giving the poster a red card and using the comment section to express my disapproval in a constructive and respectful manner.

I hope that I'll always exercise self-restraint and pass out red cards judiciously.

I have yet to come across a post that I would down vote. Anything that I would down vote needs to be reported, frankly. I've only up voted twice. So, it may be that I don't feel the need to have an opinion on everey post I come across. Lots of good folks here. We don't all hold the same perspective. Nothing wrong with agreeing to disagree in a polite manner.

We can all agree that upvoting is awesome and downvoting is NOT awesome. They'll change it back, guaranteed. Or just make upvotes possible.

I never go on full site version, so I just sit back and watch the fireworks, oblivious.

I doubt the down vote matters at the end of the day. I've gotten a down vote. No big deal. It was not for the thread I was expecting some. :) We are still early days and some folks are using it often, but I expect it will diminish with time. Whatever is decided is fine with me.

A few inappropriate down votes are no big deal if they are outweighed by up votes. I think it's good to give this a trial. It has been going for a bit now and the sky isn't falling.

I must admit that I have handed out several down vote, with a few ups. Most of the down votes are to people who are trying to silence an opinion rather then debate the topic. Honest, civil discussion is the only path to common ground.

Since no word on an upcoming update I guess we can all look forward to the 60 day trial and see what comes.

If downvote isn't hurting anyone, then it's completely useless and ineffective. I still haven't yet to hear a good reason of labeling someone with negative reputation.

It sounded like the goal was to tell everyone to ignore comments posted by this user. So you are indirectly trying to force them to quit by giving them the silent treatment?

Major platforms out there do not support downvotes. It's prone to be abused and will never achieve what the system is hopeful to accomplish. Trolls will not all sudden stop just because of a few downvotes.

I'm not disagreeing with your comment, but then why would one keep the upvoting if downvoting is scrapped? All these people who keep saying to keep upvoting but not downvoting, or those who are only giving negative, but not positive reputation make no sense to me. That is the ENTIRE point of these systems, to have both. Do folks here never leave negatives on other review based sites? TripAdvisor, yelp, CS, reddit etc? If not then you are not helping anyone out in the first place and why bother using them at all?

I hope it all gets scrapped, as both up and downvoting on these forums are imo completely unnecessary.

I'm not sure if this was in response to my post, but I didn't say down votes have no effect. I said a few incorrect down votes have no impact if they are outnumbered by the up votes. A person who regularly is a troll or is often toxic, though, will get way more down votes. Their reputation will be impacted. Whether they will care or not I guess depends on the person. Some people definitely care.

I've been down voted for the most ridiculous things. For example someone posted asking for what armies people use and someone dv me because they don't like giwiva. Their comment just says "bad" or "disagree".
I'm not paying attention to a rep system like this

I compare FRS more to the forum badge/title than a review system. The comments in FRS aren't made public and the last thing you want is to have a scoring system on indivual user based on public court of opinions. In the badge system, there is no negative badge. It's more of a reward for good behaviors and accomplishments.

But I agree, FRS adds very little value to the forum community and it has more potential to cause havoc and censor user comments.

What havoc have you seen so far? It seems pretty tame to me. A few complaints about incorrect down votes, but that is about it. A little more careful posting to avoid being toxic. That is about all I have noticed.

I've seen one member get some pretty nasty, bullying comments with his downvotes. Wouldn't be surprised if there are more out there. It will just cause people to walk away which would be a shame.

I am pretty much sticking with only positive rep. Unless someone is being totally negative or degrading. Downvoting someone for having a different opinion seems wrong.

This has not been my experience or my observation. Forum has been pretty good lately, and overall much improved over the last 18 months.

I agree the forums have improved with being less toxic, but my favorite thing about the forum was learning to play the game better. Learned a lot of tips here. Imo, the forums are offering less of those type of threads. Personally, I would hope that attack strategy and base building would be more active.

Lol, I hate to keep flip-flopping on this, you are all right, it's been pretty good today actually, just the first couple of threads I read today before I posted, especially the "global bro" thread (which is my own fault for even opening it up) were much more out there than we've seen over the last couple of weeks which made me go "oh dear, here we go, back to where its been".

Nice to see mostly positive reaction to an update annoucement, that was a refreshing change!

I think the biggest positive I've seen from FRS is having to switch to full site... I had completely forgotten about sig quotes and pics! Forgot I had some of my own too, lol.

Still not sold on the benefits. True test will be seeing it in action through an update. Until then I'll remain a bit pesimistic about the whole thing.

But yeah, I have sig quotes, who knew, lol.

It remains neutral from what I've experienced.

I just don't see a point in a reputation system in the forum. I think it's just another way for others to abuse the system like mulitple account etc. I think the more you post and the contents of the post should be considered rather than votes.

It isn't just people with less than 50 posts. Could be someone with less than 10 positive reps like myself.

I think this will be abused because people are more likely to comment on someone's reputation if they're angry. When posts are just regular old discussions, I don't see many people going out of their way to increase reputation. I think if it was more like a "like" vs "dislike" button, then people will more likely up vote and down vote. You should consider doing this, and add the optional reputation comment (like you currently have), if people want to explain why they down voted.

Also, the like and dislike button should be more prominent, and show how many likes a comment recieved. Instead of showing dislikes, you can just subtract the dislike from the like. That way it doesn't seem so negative. The random symbol at the bottom is unlikely to be used unless people already know what it's for (such as those that read this post).

I think so. But it doesn't really matter. Mostly because people will give positive rep for an opinion they agree with and negative for things they disagree with. Negative rep should really be given for rude comments or comments that breach the forum rules.

Positive rep should be given for posts that add value to the forum. Like the guy who posted the numbers for the balancing update. That deserves positive rep for taking the time to do it.

I'm not known for being Mr. Sweetness and Light, some people find my posts and style abrasive, condescending, etc, etc. I have received exactly 1 negative rep point, despite me not having moderated the way I post in the slightest since the rep system introduction.

If it were as you say I would have received several times that amount as those seeking to downvote could easily make a plausible case for doing so.

The forum inhabitants are better than you give credit for.

Yes, I get on with you the least of anyone on the forums, and would love to downvote you. But i think like most forumers I try stay objective and to my horror, found myself upvoting a post of yours a few days ago.

Allthough I will say ive only seen the good version of Aspex since the new system, not sure i agree you have not amended your level of abrasionand consdescention, a least a little.

I really think there should be some kind of engieering Amnesty, the topic was so emotional nonone came through unscathed (except Aspex of course). Maybe in the interests of goodwill, they could set all infractions and warnings back to zero?

I agree many votes will be based on "I agree" or "I disagree" but I think the "I agree" will equal or outweigh the "I disagree" votes, assuming the posts are reasonable and respectful. If that proves to not be the case, then I would suggest adding a requirement of a certain number of positive votes for every negative.

I understand what you prediction is/was. Many people shared that same opinion when this was first introduced. What I'm asking is, since this has been going awhile now, whether there is any support for it now that we have seen the system in place? People are saying it will be abused, so I think it is pretty reasonable to ask, well, is it being abused?

Im not privy to such information, and the new system has not been out long enough to gauge its long-term effects.

Because of the obscure icon, I think the system will be under-used as well, but we shall see what they say at the end of the trial period.

I was given a negative rep point for one of posts being deemed toxic, because I called engineering "cheating". The member didn't comment on the thread or even care to read any of my replies, backing off from the statement, It did spur a conversation and I got some good feedback from most members. I think this is what people are afraid of when it comes to abusing the system. If someone doesn't agree with you they can vote you down at their will.

Yes, you can see who downvoted you and the comment they left. You'll have a reputation tab whenever you get up or down voted.

Eh, it is what it is. If you get mixed up in a thread where you are in the minority you will get a lot of negative rep. Trying to get that outweighed by positive won't be easy. But I also think if someone decides whether or not your posts are of value based off a system like this, they will be missing out on a lot of good information.

I've seen a few posts where people have complained about unreasonable down votes (I've received a couple myself that clearly were an incorrect use of the down vote), but I haven't seen examples of the system being abused thus far. I'm not saying it couldn't happen or won't happen, but so far it doesn't seem to be happening.

I still say he reminded me of the scale of evil guy who was banished many times. Just the way the posts were written were so similar.

Even though I don't think engineering is cheating, I wouldn't down vote someone for saying so, assuming they weren't trolling and being toxic. I expect there will be incorrect downvotes like this, but as long as the up votes outnumber them, it isn't a big deal.

The good part about it not being anonymous is that people are less likely to do random down votes, because we know who did it and why. The bad part is someone can send unwarranted retaliations.

I hope they correct it as well. I can forsee people revenging others for downvoting. I've seen this happen once already, we don't need this to be a regular occurrence. Maybe only let people who upvote you be seen?

I guess an overwhelming lack of complaints of revenge down votes shows that the system is most likely not being abused.

Well chrome on android provides an option to go to desktop view (Not sure about others so wouldn't mention). That helps for now.

Yup, that's how I've been doing it.

However that's also how I've been handing out inaccurate votes because when I change fields the screen resizes and I accidentally change the votes in the process of submitting.

So while it's a good work around, it absolutely needs o be available for mobile if it stays.

Or due to the limited nature of this trial (only being able to vote on computers) or due to the fact that most people haven't paid attention to their forum reps. Give it enough time, the revenge down votes and associated complaints will become common.

Meh, it doesn't matter much & in fact after PMing a mod about it I was told they were looking for this kind of input as part of the decision making process anyway.

What do you base this on? Who is afraid to speak their opinion in a reasonable nontoxic way and has been pushed away? You express a lot of unpopular opinions, yet you are still plus 21. It seems to be working ok in your case, but maybe there are other people I'm not aware of that you know have been pushed away.

Were there an echo chamber then the debates/discussions/downright arguments on the topics you mentioned would not exist.

I'm a maxer. I don't believe, nor argue, that it is a superior playstyle. If your goal is to get to endgame in the fastest time rushing is obviously superior. If you're in no particular hurry and are enjoying the journey, then max. There are plenty of people who share these views on the forums.

I'm a non-engineer. I argue, vociferously, that it is not cheating. The mods and most anti-engineers on the forums will happily say that it is not cheating, even if they personally dislike it.

I currently storage raid. I have collector raided. I will continue to switch between the two as and when they suit my current time constraints/mood. I don't see much one sided discussion on the subject. I do see the odd person trying to push the superiority of one method or the other but it is not a one sided discussion.

Others in this thread have said that they feel unpopular views will get downvoted. I feel differently, that there are a large number of rational people on the forums who appreciate a discussion that presents differing POVs and may even lead to a new way to play or view the game.

I too agree. If it is within the TOS and game mechanics, it is not cheating. Doesn't mean that I will play a certain way. I also believe the game is more about the journey than the destination, unless you really love clouds.

So, they were one sided in your opinion already before the reputation system. That makes you think the reputation system will result in what? People not willing to share opposing views? You often share unpopular opinions, yet you are still here. Who is now fleeing the forums because they are afraid to share unpopular opinions? I do see unpopular opinions get down voted, but I also see them get up voted. It is the toxic rude posts that I see get a lot of down votes, outnumbering the up votes.

It is pretty much impossible for a reasonable adult who understands what the word "cheating" means to argue it is cheating. There are all sorts of reasonable arguments against engineering, but that isn't one. So, someone who says engineering is cheating is likely to get down voted and probably rightfully so, even though I haven't downvoted someone for it. On the other hand, someone simply stating they hate engineering should not get downvoted. They probably do receive some inappropriate down votes, but they also will get up votes as well. I haven't see the big huge problem yet that many keep predicting.

Can I down vote people for trashing engineers? I am a chemical engineer by profession. And I will cease to tolerate this unfounded notion that "engineers are cheaters". I have never cheated on my wife and this ♥♥♥♥ offends me. All you haters can slag off.

Not only do you often share what you say are unpopular opinions, you do so in a rude and insulting way. I've been watching your posts recently and rather than just make a good point, you insult the person you are replying to and often others as well. You are also completely dismissive of any opposing opinion. The people who disagree with you don't just have a different opinion than you, they are stupid in your mind and you can't resist pointing it out. Despite that, I don't see your reputation in the tank. That to me suggests perhaps the reputation system isn't working as intended, but also it isn't resulting in people getting ganged up on and given an insurmountable number of negative votes for posting an unpopular opinion.

I check people's profile's pretty regularly for rep, just because I'm curious to see how people are handling it. I agree with you very strongly. I'm pleasantly surprised at how much more upvoting I see compared to downvoting. Granted, there are some totally uncalled for negative reps out there, but generally speaking, people seem to be only upvoting things they like and reserving downvotes for truly toxic threads and posts. I've checked the profiles of people who have started controversial, but otherwise peaceful, threads and I'm not seeing red boxes due to disagreement.

Yes, I originally when it was first announced kept suggesting they require a certain number of up votes for every down vote, but it seems to not be needed, perhaps due to the system not being anonymous as originally intended. Maybe that is a good bug.
