Introducing: The Forum Reputation System

My fellow forumites!

Today we are activating a new forum feature - User reputation. This is something we have been wanting for a long time, but have been very cautious about how best to approach it. So before we make it a permanent feature, we are going to run a 60 day trial and see how things go.

What is the reputation system?

The reputation system is a score underneath your name (displayed as green dots - the more green dots, the higher your reputation. Hover over the dots with your mouse to see the user's title). It also allows members to show their appreciation/admiration of your posts and give you reputation points. On the flip side, it also allows users to give negative points if your post is not great or if you are being a toxic rudey pants! One thing to note is that you must leave a comment if you are giving negative reputation so that the user and moderators know why you are downvoting - keep in mind this is not a substitute for reporting a post.

Giving reputation is easy! Simply go to the bottom left of a members post, and select the reputation icon.

The higher your reputation - the better your reputation title will be. To see your reputation - simply click the star icon under one of your posts, this will tell you what your current count is.

How does the reputation system work, and what limitations are there?

• Everyone starts with 10 reputation points.
• Members must have 10 reputation points to be able to affect other people's reputation. In other words - if you have -200 reputation points, you would have to earn back 210 points before you could vote on anyone.
• Members must have 50 posts before being able to use the reputation system to vote on other people, however you can still earn reputation while under 50 posts.
• Members can only click the reputation button 10 times per 24 hours. Choose wisely!
• You must vote on 15 different users before giving reputation to the same person again (This is to help stop people voting up their friends for no reason!)
• Giving reputation in off-topic is disabled.
• Currently, the reputation system can not be seen on the mobile version. Scroll to the bottom and switch to desktop mode if you would like to use it.

If we continue using the reputation system after the trial - we will add in multipliers etc.(For example, every 100 points of reputation you gain grants you +1 voting power. Or for every year you are on the forum, you gain +1 voting power). But more on that if we decide to continue with it after the trial! Towards the end of the 60 days, we will put up a feedback thread where you can leave your thoughts and comments - This will determine if we carry on with it!

Please note that we have also added Forum Rule #20.

Could you share why you can see it being abused? there are plenty of limitations we can put in place, so once we know the flaws - we can try and fix them :)

Nice! Just one question: does this also come to the mobile version?

A notification when someone quoted you will be very very much usefull than a mere reputation system.

Well it sort of works for reddit with their up and down voting.

So is there point where if your rating is so low that you are unable to post? Will it affect anybody's ability to post in any way?

Not sure if it's supposed to affect anyone's ability to post.

I think it's more social engineering where people tell the poster what they find acceptable or unacceptable so that the poster based on their rating can see if there is any cause to amend their posting style.

Yeah, that's what I wanna ask.

Given how joyous this community can be, what happens if someone posts something that SC perhaps might not like but the community does and massively up votes it?

I still think its a good idea so have up voted you Lach.

No, posting privliges wont be changed in any way as a result of reputation.

All the alt accounts would have to have 50 posts each, be undetected by moderators and post great things to maintain a high enough reputation to then vote on the main account. Which they can then only vote on once in 15 people.

Lot of work, lot of risk of being caught and perm banned.

BTW, where will the reputation icon be? Because right now I'm only seeing the report icon there.

Hope it works out fair, can see a lot of trolls down voting until they drop under that cap. On the plus side it might be a good way to turn around some of the less helpfully people round here. Can see a lot of people down voting good posts because they disagree with the op's views.

This voting is a users reputation on the forum. As long as its within the forum rules - whether SC like it or not is irrelevant :)

Cant it be used to bully someone? People starting cults to bully and "de reputate" someone?

If somebody posts a negative review - how many points do you lose if any? As a hypothetical, it states if you are -200 then you need to recover those back in positive reviews. Also if a negative review is left and you lose points do MoDs have the final say on whether the negative review justifies the loss of points?

Or do negative reviews not reduce your score?

Sounds nice, but I guess we'll see how we'll it works over the next few months.

We could have a upvote and downvote system instead of this, where we upvote a certain post based on its quality ( just like the Reddit system)

The upvotes can be reset every week (or day)

It will also help the ideas and features request section as it's full of spam.

Rule #20, it's a new one that should help prevent this. Manipulating the rep system will result in an infraction (not certain on the exact wording but I think it's something like that :thumbsup:)

I just gave lachs post a positive review and a positive comment (i think).
Im just curious what it looks like when mods see comments. I give you permission to post my comment as an example

Negative votes only -1 people's reputation + you have to leave a comment. So any bullying would be quite hard to do, and if someone manages to do it - the user can report it to us (mods) as we will be able to look into it with ease :)

Will there be a way for someone to know there own exact reputation count?

Seems like it has been well thought out to me, and plus it is only a trial at the minute, so we can all see how it goes, adds a little extra touch to the forums

You do have to give reputation to 15 different users before returning to the same one.

I don't like this system. Reputation system is supposed to be for questions and answers sites. Best answers are given more reputation. It looks like the implementation from Stack Exchange API. Even in Stack Exchange comments are not given reputation because discussions are not productive for the original question.

Here every person keeps its own view. One is considered as toxic if one keeps a different viewpoint.

Reputation system should not be made for general subforum because it involves only views and discussions and discussions can't be given reputation. It's not like who is more right.

For problems and bugs sub-forum reputation system will work. A good solution will be given more reputation.

Yes, for some reason it doesn't show under post count.

Edit:
Few ways to find out your own reputation point:
- try to give your own post a reputation by clicking on the Star icon (next to Report button - you must be on Full Site, not Mobile layout)
- check reputation tab on your own profile (if no reputation tab, initial count = 10)
- go to your Settings (again, Full Site), scroll all the way down to see all Latest Reputation received and Given, plus the actual count.


The method below is not available for everyone. The settings is there to let you hide/show reputation and at the same time tell you how many you have. It isn't meant to be the only way to show you your own rep count.

But for now if you go into Settings > My account > General Settings > Reputation Level.
It should say it there, otherwise when people give you reputation you will get a notification which tells you what your score is.

But do you have enough mods to keep track off any potential abuse or bullying?

I don't have the reputation level anywhere in my general settings, can provide screenshots if needed, also I found an easier way by just clicking the star icon on my own posts.

People are good in justification. There will be always a convincing reason for a downvote to a comment. Giving down vote to a solution must have a strong reason so it won't be always possible. That's why discussions don't fit with reputations.

Awesome, I am going to update the OP.

I dont think that option is displayed until someone gives you rep.

This idea could lead to bullying and people being left out if it isn't used properly... Do you have system to block spam from different acc th user can make for this? You will need that lol;)

Have to agree 100% with this. This forum is all about people calling another person toxic just because they don't agree with what has been said

I understand it is a trial basis and the folks in charge will weight it all out on pros and cons if it is working or now. But really, I can see so many ways this can be abused... which means it most likely will be. I've never seen a forum with as many tight knit cliques than CoC forum has. This is very plain to see when it comes to hot button topics, or even in the Off Topic group.

I very honestly don't see how the abuse of people constantly voting for their buddies and vice versa regardless of what has been said is going to be curbed.

That being said. Can 'regular' forumers also vote on reputation of those with a badge? Gasps, content providers, and moderators?

New forum users are given a very low priority here. If their thread in general sub-forum is not good enough or a complaint thread their reputation will reach in negative. Stack Exchange makes sure that the minimum reputation should be 1 in order to protect new users if their programming question is very basic.

Is it correct to say that im allowed to up the reputation of dogs lovers but im not allowed to down the reputation of cat lovers. If that is correct then i must say dogs lovers unite through positivity

I believe there is plenty of trolling and toxicity in general already. This just provides another tool to do so.

It looks like a nice feature but it should be disabled for general subforum.

It doesn't seem to come up here. Though I can see it just under the 'infractions' on the main settings page or (like Micheallo pointed out) by tapping the rep button on my own posts.

I like the system - but the main post is missing one crucial information. How will the reputation system discourage and prevent toxicity and spam, except for warning users when they're interacting with someone potentially 'toxic'?

Yeah you're right. New users who aren't much acquainted with the forums may face problems. But I think that they will eventually get used to it.

We like the idea of expanding on this in the future - but want to keep it plain and simple for the trial.

With rewards, multipliers and more all being a possibility down the track - It means people have something to actually work towards on the forum - something that we feel has the potential to be quite special.

But lets get through this trial first :thumbsup:

I'm guessing this is a baby step towards something bigger (like the upvote/downvote system in reddit), a way to see if something like this can work without a bunch of problems (namely good threads/posters being discredited for no reason).

And of course of lach just said if it makes it past the trial stage the system may be expanded and things will probably be added. The very naughty people may be punished whereas the very good people may be rewarded. Of course this is just speculation, I have no idea what they have planned (if they have planned that far ahead) if it makes it past the trail stage :p

First of all, I think the mods should ban the people who are advertising products on the forum (there is a fresh thread on the first page of General).

This is a really positive addition guys. People really do care about their online footprint and profile. It does not necessarily mean negative feedback will damage your rep but it does mean that over time if you are totally out of step with the average forumer or you are prone to wild hyperbole it could damage your rep. Of course the odd person won't care but a vast majority will and if this leads to people trying to post positive and negative opinion in a slightly more balanced, or less personal way, then who's hurt by that?

Also, just curious. Can we only click the rep button 10 times a day, or is it 10 votes of each type (downvote/upvote).

And if it is the former, wouldn't that make people a bit less willing to click that downvote on a toxic forumer in case a nice and helpful forumer comes along?

Maybe I'm just over thinking this and most people won't end up using the 10 votes they get :p

But what if we leave a negative review on a MoD (or other badge holder) the MoD can see that review. Can they alter it and remove the review? Can they stop the negative points to their own count? If they take the review personally (which is only human nature after all) what is stopping them "getting their own back" in some way?

They already do this (they delete the thread then either ban or delete the user. Not sure if they can delete profiles though), you just won't see it happen often as they're so quick to delete threads. Of course the spam will sometimes catch the mods when they aren't around (after all they do have lives and can't permanently be on the forums), but since the promotion of a bunch of forumers last year that problems been happening a lot less.

We do my friend (as you can see) but we cannot be in every forum all the time..Just use the little report triangle on the offending posts and that's really helpful.

The rewards aspect of the system would be great, and another reason to pass the trial. Well feedback on the system could be negative but then, that could be positive if you implement some fixes while in the trial run.

Like limit the number of negative reputation for a post in near days, and once a post hits that, mods will come running for a review of the post.


If the trail passes, you could make the forums a way better place.
With increasing number of reputation, you could:
Get a custom title of your own choice.
Actually give people some small moderator rights (allowing to close a thread, once every 24 hours)
A special question to the devs :p

Also, Get lot of detailed and good posts (by people wanting rep points)


Off-topic, but can we get a everything about forum section on the homepage. There are bugs and ideas for forums(not games) which don't have any place of their own to post in.

Ok so someone says loot is bad and you say you are find great loot and you get -100 reputation from 100 people who thinks loot is bad... Someone says game is boring you say game is fun and you get shot down again by people who thinks you're wrong.
I think this will just lead to everybody agreeing with everybody...

No, you could easily do this. The only problem is that you'd have to have a valid reason for guven them a downvote, and that probably won't happen often :p

Well we have no idea why a lot of accounts get banned as public discussion of such things is prohibited. Not everything is rosy in a field full of flowers. There is always a couple of weeds. I would not want to be singled out for leaving what may be a justified review against a badge holder that is all.

If it is justified you'll likely have no problems, after all that's what the systems for.

I wouldn't react to a negative vote in any way other than reflect on whether it was a valid criticism. I have gone back and edited posts before where people have highlighted some wording they felt was unfair and on reflection I've agreed. That doesn't mean it's a free for all because obviously if any of you suffered an attack via this system or an abusive comment we would deal in the same way as a post on a thread or VM. Rule 20 is there to cover abuse of the system.

I just don't like guaranteeing things that are out of my control. I doubt any mods would ignore/bend the rules just to avoid a couple of downvotes if the reason for the down vote is valid.

Im not sure i would use this very much considering im on my phone browsing the forums and mostly on the mobile site. The full site is too cumbersome on a small phone screen. Still it seems interesting idea

btw, how do we view our score ? is on a distinguished road isn't helping tbh hehe - guessing that's 10 however

I think the ways you were meant to be able to check them are glitched currently. Though 2 ways I've found have worked are by clicking the little star button on your own posts (I found this out while checking if you could self upvote yourself (purely to report to lach to prevent exploitation), though Micheallo posted it) or by clicking 'settings' and viewing the main page there. It should be under the infractions (if you've received any). Note that that may only work if you've actually gained any rep points.

Not sure if either of those work on the mobile site though.

Reputation tab on your profiles should reveal all.....Hide it if you prefer in Settings/General settings

Just curious lach, will a downvote be shown on the person being downvoted's page?

If it does it might keep some people from just downvoting for the sake of downvoting, as well as helping the mods deal with any of these people (the person getting downvoted could tell a mod and show the reason if they feel it's invalid).

I'm guessing that this wasn't intended, or that they're trying to get it onto the mobile site. After all if this does continue it could become a fairly important/helpful part of the forum. Leaving the many mobile site users out of this would seem a bit silly to me.

Do mods approve downvote first before getting shown? I'm wondering how will they review all reasons of downvoting before getting counted. If downvotes are counted immediately and automatically then most of the downvotes will be illegitimate and revengeful.

No we don't. If you feel the forum rules have been breached then message a Mod. NOT simply because someone voted down a post or you disagree with the vote..only if the forum rules regards abuse of the system, swearing, insults etc are breached.
