Why is their negative rep button? So those that complain about everything waste their time complaining about the negative rep thing leaving SC with fewer complaints about the actual game.
Just by seeing the atmosphere here in the forums it's pretty clear what the negative rep button can do no matter if it's used or not. We are about the best I have ever seen....
i think you missed my point that is if you get downvoted just coz u disagreed to someone even when your post was well written then that would demotivate you and many people wont like to write more quality threads as there is always gonna be someone who just wants to downvote coz hey its there and i dont like that person, and the reputation system is there on any forum to promote healthy discussions and motivate to contribute more so that you get some prestige from those points.
If you say upvotes will outnumber downvotes well not really, not everybody wants to give those upvote just for every sensible post they see unless its really extraordinary and thats where rep points play role to promote more extraordinary threads but there are many who will just downvote and even if they get banned they will create another account just to downvote and no one will like that red line on their profile
i think this thread was different from many other threads about the same topic so i created a new one as i wanted to say some specific points in this one, and if a mod feel this needs to be merged then it should be but you gave a perfect example here i could get downvoted here, whereas i have just tried to post a thread and keep my views
It should be done away with completely. I see something that is salty so I down vote it. See two others also down vote it, but five give it an upvote. Seems some forumers like to see salt. In the end this isn't going to change anything really.
If they want to have the community do something useful, make it so if there are five reports done on a thread/comment it is hidden from view until a mod checks it. Then they can either remove it completely or let it be seen again with a note on why it was ok.
I haven't had any issues with receiving negative rep points and by the look of you profile you haven't either. I believe that the system is great and enjoy having the option.
I will say that the "Revenge vote" is a problem. In fact that is the only reason why I received any negative rep points. The two membersides I originally gave the downvotes to were so blindly mad AND where not able to find anything wrong with my posts, that they literally made stuff up or where just rude.
If anything I would propose that there be a 24 plus hour cool down to revenge vote. So if I DV somone they can't just come back to me and DV for no reason (except anger) unless they wait 24 plus hours and by then hopefully they would have cooled off.
The number of post that are condescending and questioning of other people's intelligence are way down. I consider that a success. Their are several long time posters who used to have kinda a snarky attitude who are now posting in a polite and helpful manner. That is another positive sign.
As everyone knows, there has been several revenge rep hits, but for the majority of the forums it has improved everyone's attitude in general.
If I thought the reputation system would have created this many threads on its own, I might have thought twice about supporting it. XD
It's like a cottage industry, might even need its own sub-Forum.
But seriously, we all need to develop thicker skins and realize there are always critics.
Some have good reasons and some don't.
I can't help thinking of all those memes a few years ago titled "First World Problems"....
You can PM a mod about a revenge downvote. As far as I understand it the revenge voter is likely to regret it.
And in particular - if the person leaving the downvote with the comment on you "Th 9 opinions are irrelevant" was in any way a revenge downvote. That's just plain toxic, and must be reported to deter whoever it was.
It would make a lot of sense, but they are using off-the-shelf software for the forum, so it may well not be an available feature.Quote:

I have to agree here. There is a lower frequency of those toxic posts since the rep system's inception. Perhaps that may change when and if they fully launch this rep system and it is deployed on mobile site. Just odd to me that the criteria for a down vote is not outlined very well. It makes that part very subjective. Some downvote because they disagree with an opinion and others do not.
