Back to the actual topic of the thread, I think it would be an improvement to the rep system if the names of voters were only visible to mods. While the vast majority act responsibly, there's always a few that don't.

The nice thing about the lack of anonymity is that I think it discourages people from downvoting recklessly. I have no empirical evidence for that, it's just what I think. There are definitely pros and cons to both. Revenge downvotes are stupid, which you get with this system, while keyboard warrior downvotes are no better, which is what you (probably) get with anonymity. Which would we rather deal with?

Either way, I prefer names visible for upvotes. I guess it doesn't really matter though. I would probably just start signing rep votes if they were made anonymous.

I think it's better with names visible. In fact I'd probably prefer it if they were fully visible to everyone.

The fact the victim can see the voter I think does make people a bit hesitant about downvoting, which is good. I think downvotes are helpful, but you wouldn't want them sprayed around too much.

Revenge votes are a downside, but they are not permitted, so anyone doing that is on a dangerous road. I don't know how often they happen, but my impression is not that much. The mods seemed surprised how few disputed downvotes were being reported to them.

Agreed. I would be willing to bet that a significant portion of the revenge downvotes that have occurred have actually been aired out in a public thread. And I do think that revenge downvotes would be much easier to combat than outright trolling or other consequences of anonymous downvoting.

I think the system as it exists now is actually quite good, and seems to be proving quite effective. The possibility of people with higher rep having more weighty rep votes is interesting, but we're a ways out from that yet

Checking the basics is always worthwhile. There have been several "connection issue" threads where a reboot of the router resolved the problems so I'd say that that should not qualify for a dv.

Justification for downvotes is necessary for the rep system to be as free from potential abuse as it can be. It also makes the person giving actually think about why they are doing so.

I agree re the lack of anonymity. If you would not be willing to justify a downvote to the recipient, should they contact you, then you should not be giving that dv in the first place.

With upvotes, I would like to think that some of the recipients of mine have been surprised at getting one from me. I know that I have been by some of the ones that I've received. I think that this could actually engender a better overall atmosphere on the forums.

Anonymity to downvote? Not at all. People will then downvote you with their personal views about what they feel about your post even if their reason is not good enough to downvote someone. Personal reasons come inbetween.

it would be easy to get all your friends to search someones user name and downvote random posts of theirs. If your someone influential you could get whole guilds to headhunt someone easily enough. Its a popularity contest, nothing more.
