hello I am new and would like to say how I love this game. I have requested friends through GC, but no one at the moment has responded, though I could be doing something wrong. Also although I buy from the newspaper I have only one follower. Please can someone explain how this works. I have looked on the forum under this topic but can 't find an answer. thanks.
Welcome Yorkenshaw. The game allows you to choose to follow up to five different farms. There is no limit on how many farms can choose to follow you.
You can follow a farm by tapping the tag in the circle above the smiley face when visiting a farm. The farms you follow will show in your friends tab, outlined in blue instead of yellow. The farms that follow you will be found on a separate Followers tab.

It's helpful to include your GC ID and farm level in your signature (like i have) so that people can find you easily. Remember to accept friend requests through GC and that requests you send need to be accepted by the invitee - this isn't an automatic process.
Happy farming, and you wil find the game opens up a lot of benefits as you start to build up some GC friends.
Thanks I think I get it now. I went to a farm and purchased wool, added the friend, but didn't get the wool, still never mind.
You don't need to purchase in order to follow someone. You only have five slots though, so choose carefully. If you want to un-follow someone, just tap the same icon you use to follow.

I understand how to follow people but how do I get to their farms in the first place so I can follow them????

Please,how do i see which farms i'm following,i must have Chosen 5 cos can't follow anyone else,but i don't know who they are.
Also have a friend who can't see me on her friendship bar, friendship,request on FB, can't find her on GC.
I can see her on my friend bar.thnxs

You can follow me as long as I don't smell bacon and eggs :)
Never sell bacon and eggs,but can't follow you cos am told all slots are full.
To unfollow, go to any farm that is highlighted in blue on your friends bar, then tap the tag above the smiley face in top right corner. It will say, "farm unfollowed."
