I think I was able to buy a cheap axe as well. I usually visit right after I do the wheel of fortune and the mailbox when they come at 8pm EST, so I can't really remember everything I got. It was one item(the axe), and I bought the produce for the heck of it. His toolbox hardly ever opens for me, since I don't visit much. I don't do the refresh thing until it opens; I just move on to the next farm and then the next until it finally opens. And sometimes I get lazy to do that ahha.
I haven't forgotten to check but I usually just grab everything that's in there whether I need it or not. I have even grabbed strawberries! STRAWBERRIES! I do this because his stall is the only one where I can raid it completely without any guilt or shame whatsoever. ;)
