If .5 is done in a balanced fashion, you'll be .5 for maybe a month out of the year or two you'll spend at th9. On the forum the use of the term "engineering" immediately moves a discussion to the extreme engineering with defenceless bases. While someone following the .5 route starts of with preventing to become a disadvantage for it's clan.

Saw it happening in my clan. Two TH9 moving to TH10 and dropping their inferno's immediately (one even bought the TH10 valuepack with the lvl2 inferno). Next war they were nr1 and 2 on the warmap and we lost as they weren't able to deal with their mirrors. They felt guilty and asked not to select them for wars for a while. The next two TH9's moving to TH10 saw this happening and will start with building their offensive strength first. We are a clan with casual players, they never heard of engineering.

I personally think .5 bases are not a big issue in the MM. Yes it gives you an advantage, but if you don't do it, it's a disadvantage. either way isn't fair but the gap it causes in MM can be dealt with in most cases. extreme engineering as in defenceless bases with TH9-11 troops gives a hugh advantage and isn't fair at all. In that case your are misleading the MM in an extreme way. I think SC will eventually deal with these kind of lopsided bases.

Agree about .5s since October. Just starting a new th is a MM disadvantage, short term .5 limits the damage somewhat, and pushed too far the MM punishes you for being .5. Seems fine to me.

Defenseless with heavy offense? I'm still not convinced there's a problem. I never see them myself, when other do its not clear they provide an advantage (net of the matchmaker). When perma-.5s were OP, you'd see clans that were mostly .5 tearing it up. If defenseless is a big advantage shouldn't someone be able to point me to a clan that wars mostly defenseless, maybe one or two anchors at the top, running a big win streak?

The argument that "its a big advantage but doesn't scale, you only want one or two" precisely mirrors the argument for perma .5s before the March 2015 update. It was a wrong argument, but impossible to prove since the effect of one or two accounts can get lost in the noise.

There you go. "Normal" upgrade path - what you'd do if there was no clan war, no extensive thought/discipline put into the upgrade - involves going preemie. Easy to put down high weight defenses, hard to upgrade the crucial heroes, etc. Game boxes you into a corner, until you feel cash is the way out (or restart, and you'll want to at least buy your builders for the new account).
This is a trophy push game with clan wars belatedly added, subject to profit maximizing constraints of the parent company. Perfect matchmaking is just not possible under these constraints, but I think its pretty good right now.

Never once have I read on here how engineering is good for the longevity of the game. That is the key component that people who engineer seem to overlook. People get frustrated facing it in wars, they quit. Player pool gradually gets smaller till overtime your left with a fraction of the player base that are all engineers. Is a green log worth the decline of the very game you are striving to get that green war log in?

It isn't good for the game but until SC fixes the MM, you have to engineer a little bit if you like winning.

I don't know about you but grinding out clan xp on losses sucks and with the clan xp nerf we got you have to grind even more. The game changes so much we constantly have to adapt how we play they way we do (war,farm,push). It also takes time to build your base more or less depending on how much time and/or $$ you spend. So how do you get a fair war match, and what is a fair war match?

I think the way you eliminate the clan war MM issue is that when you do clan wars your war base is automatically maxed offense and defense, war rosters get matched up one for one. It then comes down to base building and attack execution. kind of splits the war off from the farm/push as a different game mode.

As it is now, in clan wars you do your best to massage the MM so that you get a reasonable match. Sometimes it goes your way sometimes their way, and sometimes it is a toss up (fair) match. But if you and your clan just rigidly adhere to must max, must .5, must stack roster this way, good luck with that.
