What you consider unnecessary might not be what others consider unnecessary. I for one like the changes. What would you have the artist team do as "useful changes" if they are not allowed to work on the character profiles?

Erm, just in case we're all caught up in moaning about a 'purely' cosmetic change...

I spy 13 icons in a row without scrolling.
Dunno bout you, but I'm pretty damned sure I have to scroll a bit even with a bowler spam of only 4 troop types, 4 spell types, and 3 heroes.
(Only 11).
