Worked my way up to L33, TH7, and about 1200 trophy pts. Every upgrade now takes at least a day - some several days.
Is this the point where free play ends? Haven't bought any gems yet, and wouldn't mind spending a reasonable amount. Seems like $10-$20 in gems will hardly buy any upgrades...and I am not gonna drop more than that on this game. Thoughts?
Nope I have town hall level8 with no gems spent trophies high of 1650

There are tons of people with TH9 maxing out everything (taking up to 14 days per upgrade) without a single gem bought..
Just be patient, play some other games in meantime go outside etc. No need to spend money to hurry up, enjoy it rather.

The waiting takes longer, but you also need to farm more gold to keep your builders busy.
Just max out every TH and you will be busy enough!
Spend cash on builders so you have 5.
Don't forget there are also walls to max. They will keep you busy for a loooooooooong time!
Really now? I play a lot and am level 68 with a mostly maxed out th8 (I spent five bucks for a builder four). I know I started in September, and the game came out a bit before that, but I find it hard to believe someon is fully upgraded without spending anything.Quote:

The game gives you a clear choice: To get far in the game you must put in a lot of time OR a lot of money. You cant play for 20 minutes a day and never spend a dime and expect to have 3500 trophies and a maxxed out base, because that just isnt the way the game is meant to be. Pay up, buckle down, or you will never get past being mediocre.

If you care to spend, best investment is in speeding up troop builds and looting for the gold/elixir over buying gold and elixir. If you want to gem the build times, then the sooner you do it, the better deal you get (more minutes at a time gets better deal per minute).
The only free play wall is the limit of your patience
Onlylvl 33? at TH 7?! I'm lvl 56 at TH7 and my stuff is nearly maxxed and have no plans on upgrading soon. You kinda rushed it mate and that's bad. But it's free to play I upgrade stuff that takes like a 5-6 even more days and I don't complain.. Youndont need gems but I'd say your defence needs it.
just think...the longer the upgrade, the more rewarding and satisfying it will be when it is done :)

(I have a funny feeling on who may be first to jump on claiming credit.)
The sad fact is, the upgrades do get longer as you level up,
the prices more exorbitant (who knew a L7 mortar would cost more than an X Bow?!)
- and most of us here know what senseless, mind-numbing pain raiding for millions of gold or elixir can be.
(I do suspect that I will develop early signs of carpal tunnel as a result of this game. But I digress.)
I have found however, that a mixture of slight OCD tendencies, coupled with some patience, a sprinkle of humility, and heaps of the right company - in the form of like-minded clannies & real life friends who play the game -
to be the base of a recipe for a clashingly good time.
That being said,
I have never been above gemming a lil' here and there to make that journey a little less dreary,
and my 5 builders have given me more joy than you would expect from 5 pixelated little men.
Hunt, farm, or trophy chase
- whichever road gives you the best return of your investment (be it time or money).
