Which combo is better?
Dragons obviously, but they cost more. Also, I don't think ANYONE uses balloons after TH 5/6.
Bloons+minions all the way, add one dragon for tanking. There's couple of blooning guides from the link on my signature, if interested.
I have being using dragons/balloons strategy for last week and it got me up to 1900 trophies. I am using like 4 dragons and 12-14 balloons with the rest as archers plus a few giants. It worked wonderful for me at least.
But my balloons are lv4. Anything under that is ♥♥♥♥ at higher trophy level as balloons have too little hp and too low damage at lv3 and below.
Dragons and minions sounds like a possibility. Maybe I should try but I need to get those minion lv up first...
Why not use all three (balloons, minions and dragons)? Take a look toward the end of this thread (it started as dragon only then it evolved to balloons and finally with minions).

I used to do 36 balloons and 1 dragon for a raid, but I stopped cuz it was getting boring.
but damage was devastating. and I never had to lightning the AD. I got to 1600 trophies with this army. it only failed twice out of like a 100 times.
so usually, I would send in about 6-9 balloons after each AD. then once they were taken out, I would deploy a couple more balloons. Once enough defense was taken out, I would send in my dragon, and a little later, my barb king to clean up the mess left behind by balloons. if I didn't fail or get a 3-star, then it usually about 97-99% because of time. I would usually end up using only about 24-28 balloons. In fact, one time I only used 10 balloons and a barb king! (but the base was bad)
Balloons are always underestimated. Yes at lower levels, they are bad, but once they're level 4, they TEAR DOWN EVERYTHING! balloons aren't much different from giants. Balloons are slow, yes, but giants have a move speed of 12, balloons have 10. its only 2 less. Balloons do TONS OF DAMAGE! 1 lvl 4 balloon can take about a lvl 8 cannon or so out in 3 hits, or 12 seconds. However, AD and AT can kill them really easily. One or three balloons won't do anything unless you have giants or something else on the bottom as distractions. If balloons were useless, why would Daddy use them? I never underestimated the power of balloons, and that was good. Balloons have they're pros and cons like any other troop!
Pros:
-High Damage
-Mortars and Cannons can't target it.
-A bunch of them will tear down a base.
-Saves you a bunch of troops and elixir on the first few goblin maps.
-Targets Defenses
-At level 6, one balloon can 1-shot lvl 1-4 giants, 2 of them can one-shot any level giant
-Since it doesn't go to the middle of the defense and kill it, it can also damage the other nearby buildings and walls unlike other troops!
-Area Splash
Cons:
- Training Time
- Movement Speed
- Low HP until higher levels
- AD and AT can shoot down very quickly

So basically, balloons are more better and useful than you think. Use a squad of them, and watch the destruction.

Ok.. I dunno ♥♥♥ i was thinking when i upgraded golem to lvl 2.. I should have done minion upgrades.. I want to use this army at 2200+ instead of gowipe. How far can i expect to climb with balloon minion army?

Baloonies + minions! You won't regret that choise. The baloons DPS is insane when you get them to higher levels.
Last week i got attacked by something like (Cant remember exactly) 2 dragons 30 balloons and like 30 minions and 4 lighting spells. Totally wrecked my base - first time id been 100%'ed in a long time.

To people who underestimate baloons for trophy pushing, obviously you don't know what Illustris is up to.
I'm currently at 3k2+ trophies and i'm using balloons + minions combo with 4-5 spells . Just to let you know that this combo is more powerful than you think .

I'm a big fan of Ruthless Barbarian's "DAM" army - Dragons and Minions (personally, I'd call it DraM, or maybe DraMin'...) Check out his youtube video on DAM, and subscribe to his channel!
Balloons level 6 are great, I'm sure, but you have to be TH9+. I only have level 4 balloons, and have found them to be far too weak - level 5 looks like a big boost, but I've been busy upgrading other troops e.g. minions, to try that option...
For me, at TH8, Dragons + Minons have a lot of benefits:
- You could, in theory, start using this as early as TH7 (although I think TH8 is probably the sweet spot)
- They are resonably priced upgrades (much cheaper than pekka and golems)
- You can brew a decent army only using 4 barracks (3 level 9 regular, and 1 level 1 dark), leaving barracks free to brew donations for our clan, something to loot the goblin maps with, upgrade your barracks, etc.
- It brews in 60 minutes max (from your 3rd attack on), and of course while you are searching for the next base, your next batch is brewing. Typically, I only do 2-4 raids per session, so actually I get my first two raids in just over 30 minutes.
- It only requires a bit of practice, and two main skills -
- patience, for choosing the right base (ideally, loot + trophies)
- an understanding of the basic capabilities of each troop, e.g. 5 of my minions can take out pretty much any air defense; inferno towers have a pretty long reach and burn by dragons to a crisp very quickly; a raging dragon or two can take down a town hall even under pretty heavy tessla fire
- You can, with a bit of searching, find bases with poor air defenses, way into Crystal (personally tested, by me, to 2400 cups)
- This army can not only get you 1-2 star wins, it can also clean up bases offering amazing loot (far more easily than, say, a GoWiPe army, which tends to perform better getting the town hall than getting all the collectors) In particular, with league bonus, you should be able to raise your trophies (2000++), make a heap of gold, make a profit in elixer if you choose the right bases and snipe TH where found, and make a decent profit in DE too.
With a bit of practice, I've used the following army up to just over 2400 cups, and pretty much every loss has been from me rushing the selection of base and/or the attack:
- 6 dragons (level 3)
- 40 minions (level 3 - level 4 upgrade finishes tomorrow)
- 3 rage (level 5; hopefully, I never use more than 2) - taking lightning is wasting a slot that could better be used for rage, especially when I've only got three slots
- King level 10, and clan castle (ideally, archers and/or a dragon) - for emergencies only, to scrape up 50%
Not only have I won a lot of battles with this army, I've also made some pretty phenominal loot at times - I tend to look for bases with loot in collectors, and a good chance of 50% and/or getting the town hall.
This is an extreme example, getting three in a row like this, but I now have plenty of raids with this kind of loot (and I often pass on loots around the 400k of each level, where I'm not 95% confident in getting win+loot):

well congrats. you are missing out on one of the most versatile and powerful troops in the game.
biggest weaknesses are cc troops and high lvl archer queen, as balloons won't target them until all defenses are cleared.
'mini balls' is a devastating attack. no rage needed. try heal instead. the speed is less than a handicap than u think, as walls are simply ignored. dragon balls is arguably more powerful but less consistent, as dragons are more susceptible to ad fire than minis, and are easily pulled off course by cc troops and heroes.
oh and then there's mini ballhogs... nuff said
I have realized now that ballons are underrated. I used them once recently (just ballons and minions) and got around 70% of a base, and mine are only level 3 still.
I plan to max them (lvl 5 for TH8) and plan to use them more often, especially when I want to push which I intend to do now since I don’t need loot, just waiting for my builders to max my defenses.
My question is, why would you add ground troops, such as giants? I understand they would distract AT and WT, but they would not do it on AD. Plus to be effective they would need to be in numbers as there are a few AT and WT they need to take care of. And during this time they will be under fire from ground cannons and mortars. Plus, then you may need also some WB to open a path for them. So basically you will be occupying a few valuable army spots that you could use to add more ballons or minions.
In my opinion, if you go for air attack, then go all air. No need to reduce the numbers of your air army by using other ground troops.
In terms of spells, I use only rage (but because I only attack with ground troops). When I am going to use air raids, I intend to use lightening more to either take out an AD or the CC troops.
I have tried both at TH8 and I think Dragonion is more consistent with a faster build than Ballonion.
But yes it is more expensive, also multiple DE Air Mines will ruin Drags a lot more than Balls.
Pure air is better than air+ground, but more expensive still.
I have used 4-8 Drags plus 15-20 Minions as core, add Barb/Arch to cheapen the load and cook time if required.
Careful base selection is key no matter what composition (avoid ITs and central ADs at all costs)
I'm at 2552 using 32-36 Lev 6 Balloons matched with 20-30 Lev 5 Minions with maxed Rage.... I got to 2500 just using one or two Rages... now I need all five spells, and have incorporated maxed Healing spell as well.
Honestly, I don't think there is any troop combo that is better at this level... Check out the number three guy in the world, Gregsan of Kings Landing -- over 4k trophs -- uses this combo as well.
I'm not convinced using 8-10 Drags plus Minions would be much better... Look at the stats. Perhaps marginally, but not worth the significant extra cost.
Btw, Balloons and Minions are indeed two of the most underrated troops... I think this is because they're not that effective at lower level (have to be maxed) and people write them off without upgrading or learning how to use.
It's far better to have Lev 5 Minions in your Clan Castle than Lev 6 Archers... Look at those stats, not even close. But try and convince a typical "Archers" clanmate of that... ♥♥♥♥.

Yea people overlook balloons kind of. Their dps and hp doubles from level 4 to level 6 and the total dps and hp is increased by 1.5 from 5 to 6. They are pretty bad at 4 and below and arent even that great at 5. Balloons and minions all the way. I use 20 to 24 balloons and the rest minions (level 6 and 5 respectively) and if I am trying to raid quick ill use one heal or rage. If I fill my spells up I normally do 1 lightning for cc troops, 2 rage, and 1 heal.
All dragons and 20-30 archers for the CC troops and rage spells...or lightening to take out air defense. As a TH7 I get three stars against virtually any TH7 and below in clan wars with this and it will wipe out TH8's also if they have neglected their air defenses. I only use this strategy for clan wars as its obviously expensive. I typically will boost a barracks to make the training faster.
