first, are you a war player? if so yes
second, if you are a war player, you're gonna wanna max those heroes first
Yes definitely a war player. I have already pushed the button so hereos will be at top of list but in other terms what can I add and keep ww down to stay true to the .5

I dont think there is a "true .5". But if I was going to go to th10 without maxing heroes, then I would only add the new traps and the non defensive buildings. I would not add walls early.
walls, traps, cc, teslas, and all the elix upgrades (lab, spells, camps, barracks). Will all not change your war weight. Spend all that time working on walls and heroes, being th10 these days without max heroes, is tough.
Much of this is going to depend on the rest of your clan makeup. The post update MM tweaks have to be accounted for. If you don't have many .5's in your clan, or defenseless bases, you should be fine. If you have a lot of .5 bases with maxed to nearly maxed heroes...that's going to be a different story. A lot of good posts on the Clan Wars sub for you to get up to speed.
All that aside, if you are looking to go .5 route- you can put walls down. Won't notice anything until you are maxing them. Max your traps, teslas while you are working on offensive upgrades (CC, camps, etc). I wouldn't drop the bomb towers, or your new arch twr or cannon for a bit. Max what you have- especially the cannons. The defensive buffs are (pardon the pun) bang for the buck. You will probably rise about 1K in defensive weight.
I dropped the additional walls and upped them to level 10 prior to the latest update. It didn't move the needle one bit- defensive weigh wise. Not sure if anything was tweaked for them with the update. Level 11 walls, have an affect. Yes, teslas and traps will be fine to upgrade. A must.
