I want to use strategies like goho, govaho, and gowiva at th9. My hogs are level 4, valks level 2, and golem level 2 from townhall 8. Which one of the troops should I start on in the lab first? Should I max each troop one by one or should I spread upgrades out between the troops? Please comment what you have done in the past or what is best for starting out. Thanks for reading!
When I went to th9 the first thing i upgraded (after giants... you should do giants first, in my opinion) was valks to lvl 4. Then I did hogs to 5. Golems are good to upgrade, but you can usually get away with just onion an attack and you can take a max in cc, so I'd max valks and hogs first.

DE upgrades should likely be the first in the lab.
In general, giants shouldn't see the lab for quite sometime. An exception might be if you are a serious farmer, but...
I also disagree about early TH9 going valk before hogs. Many/most early TH9s just get steam rolled with a simple GoHo, especially with the GB change. I still submit hogs are the easy, first choice.

my upgrade strategy (as th9) was:
1) Golem (up to level 4) - they are useful for quite every strategy
2) Hogs (up to level 5) - with this couple of troops you may plan a GoHog attack (and I think it is one of the best strategy for wars)
3) Valks (up to level 4) - especially now they are one of the easiest troop to use
4) Wizards (now up to level 6) - same reason as for golems: quite every strategy implies wizards
After them, I would upgrade spells.
I suggest to upgrade one troop to the max level instead of spreading the upgrades between the troops.
I think that it is better to use in war only maxed troops.

I'm curious why you'd pick golem over hogs, especially once the CC is upgraded to 30 and an early TH9 can bring a max golem in itQuote:

I did valks before hog but its easy to see the argument for reversing that, especially if you want to war immediately. Valks need 2 upgrades and hogs only 1 so your hog will be done faster. Hog is also cheaper than either valk upgrade.
I'm in the camp that golem can come after those b/c you can bring a max golem in the CC. I think I am even going to do an elix upgrade or two before golem but I have a few days to decide for sure.

I went hogs to 5 first (gives you goho right off the bat) Then I went giants 6, healer 4. This allowed me to focus on queen. Improve my farming army greatly. And give me the troops I have been using for war for months. HGHB is still one of the strongest attacks at th9. I have a much higher 3 star rate with this than clanmates pushing GoVaHo or GoValk. The majority of bases are just screaming for it. Then I did heal spell. By this time AQ was not embarrassing anymore lol. Then I went valk 3, valks 4, Golem 3, Wizards 6, poison 3. Now I'm doing loons and sad I waited so long, BUT I wouldnt change the order at all. It has helped me to consistently three star 67k TH9s with stronger heroes than me...how can I complain? Now, having some more experience, I completely agree.
Upgrading the CC is definitely a priority.

I think sometimes it is not enough. Maybe it can work on early TH9. But it presumes that the attacker has a great ability in positioning the second golem (greater than mine:)).

Before the last game update (without the nerf on the double giant bomb) I would disagree. Now, I think you are definitely right.
Anyhow, I think that loons (and air attack in general) are quite a trouble for early TH9. They require high level heroes imo.
