Personally, it's not about who's willing to spend or not. It's about how we want to play our game. If we're impatient enough then we Gem. But if we think it's more challenging doing everything "manually" then it's up to us.Quote:

The problem at that level is time....if I can explain:
They will use max pekkas or dragons maybe a few wizards, this will cost them upwards of 350k elix and take 2-3 hours to build, that's without the spells as they will use 3-4 of those taking 4-5 hours without gems. Let's not start talking about the hero heal time which can be 12-24 hours
They will typically get 1-5 cups for a successful fight which might take half an hour to find, and maybe 200k gold/elix (this isn't the problem but thought I'd mention it)
So there's a 4-5 hour build cycle approx for a very small amount of cups therefore they can probably gain maybe 15-20 cups in a long day, bear in mind they need to touch the screen every three minutes or they will go off-line
When they do go offline they will be pretty much instantly attacked - no one skips at that level, fights are so rare.
As soon as they are attacked they will almost DEFINATELY lose a lot of cups as lower ranked players will find them - it's not uncommon to lose 30-40 cups in a fight. It's really rare to win n defence as everyone has pretty much the same troops.
I hope this gives you a taste of why gems are so important at that level, I'm not a gemmer or a top player - the highest I've personally been was 103 and that was in October but I do have a lot of friends up there....

sometimes I wonder if the gain/loss in trophies will ever change....
for example being able to lose and/or gain in the 100+ trophies in just one fight
sure would make things interesting but SuperCell has their economics figured out to keep them at the top grossing iOS game.I have bought some gems for a few things but getting the 5 builders very early was the best value for my buck. Time will tell if I buy more but I used to take rolls of quarters to the arcade & will drop money on XBox games so I do not see this as any different. I just spend a LOT more time playing CoC. :)
Will I spend $1,000+ & be a whale... meh... well, never say never...
