Has any1 bothered to check how effective this is. Lets say you have a 12 hour shield or even a 1 day... In the long run do u get more elixir or gold by this or just straight up purchasing in a block?

Boosting isnt worth it. You are better off either waiting or raiding. Using gems to get resources in any way is pretty much a waste of money. Builders huts are the most productive way to use gems (the only times I ever bought), probably followed by reducing wait times. Otherwise, not really mich point, in my opinion. (unless you are a top player)

Basically the summary is: either buy in bulk or just learn patience. (Learning patience is much recommended)
