Instead of having to opt out of the derby why not make it you have to opt in to play the derby? Reason is we have several players in our group who haven't played in months and the leader doesn't want to boot them. We were talking and I came up with this idea, so thought I'd suggest it. This way if everybody starts out as not playing if you want to play the weekly derby you have to opt in and when you are going to be away you opt back out again.
I like this idea! Inactive players stay opted out and it's not a chore for active players. Simple and effective

However, it doesn't work if a farmer pops onto their farm for a few moments, as that means they are not inactive. Until recently I had a hoodie who did this; she appeared to be inactive and didn't complete any Derby tasks. By careful observation I could tell that she had been on, as something changed on her farm. I eventually realised she was visiting once a week to collect derby and horseshoe prizes that she had not worked towards.
To cut a long story short, she's no longer with us. She appears to be using the same tactics in her new hood!

I would have preferred this, however, we grit our teeth and kicked all who were inactive. We invited who we could back. Some did, some did not.
