As I page through the daily dirt looking desperately for some needed item, I often find that the farm add I click takes me to a farm full of empty boxes or one with all boxes marked sold. It would save all of us time and effort and irritation if the algorithm could just filter these out before offering the dirt so to speak.

These items have all been sold and the money picked up by the seller by the time you arrive. Greeted-out bins are sakes where the mines has NOT been picked up. The empty shops are not artifacts of old sale or ads.
When daily dirt is generated for you, all items visible in dd is up for sale. A new dd is generated for you every 2 minutes or so. And the item visible in the paper can be sold 1 second after it's been generated in your paper, so it's not that they were empty when your paper was created, so it's not much to do with the algorithm.
