Is there any advantage to fishing in different spots during a non-event with the red lures?
For instance, i read that during an event the single "swampy" fishing spot can give you a special fish and this is the only area on the map that will do so with a red lure. But what about during non events -- is there anything i can unlock or take advantage of? Right now I make lures so slow that I just fish in the first 2 "newbie" spots right up top near the dock.

I think no matter where you are fishing with the red lures, you will always get the same basic fishes. I fished hundred and hundred of fishes with these lure and I got nothing special.
So the question was about different spots, and my answer isn't about that. But kinda related, as this is non-event and red lures.:)
Sockeye Salmon have a higher average weight than the other fish you normally catch with red lures outside of events, so learning to tell when those are on the hook will help you get derby fishing tasks done faster. You can find plenty of threads discussing that, but basically the sockeye salmon are the ones that move slowly.
I have done a lot of fishing in my time and read some fishing guides.
I haven't found any 'favorite' locations for the 3 common red lure fish. Sockeye Salmon, Copper Redhorse & Huchen.
However, as pointed out above the Huchen; which is the lowest weight of the 3 tends to put up the biggest fight. If the fish is zipping around a lot it's likely a Huchen.
Copper Redhorse is the medium weight in the red lure division.
While Sockeye Salmon is the heavy weight in the red lure division, and oddly enough tends to put up the least amount of fight of the 3.
It's worth being aware of that when trying to get the bronze, silver & gold types of the fish. As well as for fishing events/fishing derby tasks.
In fishing/derby tasks I let the really zippy ones go, Huchen are sometimes horrible weights like 1.3lbs. Takes ages to accumulate with that poor weight.
Ok, so that might explain how those derby tasks are remotely do-able with red lures... Are people catching the 100 pounds of fish using just red lures? I never even consider those tasks because it seems insane when I routinely catch 1-2 pound fish and it takes 90 minutes for a lure!
I am embarrassed to say I have 122 lures of all different colours.
I was very happy to have a use for my vouchers when the fishing first started.
I have 4 production spots for my lures and 3 for my nets.
When I am not fishing, I put out nets and lobster traps and make and save lures.
When I am fishing, I am not using lobster traps and nets.
I often do the 100 odd points of fishing tasks with red lures alone.Quote:

Yup. I use red lures for fishing task, but before I a make sure I have a good amount in Stock. Like now, I have 50 red lures. Which make the task easier. When you're low, you have to wait over an hour for a new lure. When you have some already in Stock, you can fish 12 fishes to 2-3 pounds each = 24-36 pounds, every 2-3hrs. MCMLXXXIX1989 please read up above about the comments for focusing on Sockeye Salmon so that you can get fish that are ~4pounds each. There's no need to be wasting time with small fish.Quote:

So I just tried the trick mentioned in this thread. 317 points, 109Kg task.
In around 5 hours I fished 76Kg of fishes with basic red lures. I used around 20-25 lures to get there.
But I don't think it can be done in 4h30 without speeding up.
Fishing 3 times on 2h spots. at 0 min, 2 h & 4 h
2 times on all other fishing spots.
That makes 27 catches. 27 sockeye salmon weighs on average 108 lbs, and if you get a little lucky you can score 110 lbs in 4 hours (fishing cool off) and some fishing time. Only 4.08 lbs average is needed to reach 110 lbs. :)
