I think you need the gold lure to try to get the golden trout. That's what I read in the hayday wiki, I think.

^ Yes you can catch the Golden trout with gold lure only at the waterfall spot. But don't do it while the fish event is on because you will lose them on other fish like Zander and Carp (event fish)..vfrood already said that :P
