Has anyone heard about this barn-space-making "update"???

I've copied what Tomville posted in a "tool shed" thread over in the Ideas forum. I extracted her post from the thread because I felt it was getting lost. Am I the last one to know about this, or did its arrival get lost in the hoopla of the update? I'm posting here as a "public service announcement". I have my own suggestion at the end, so if it ought to go back to Ideas, that's fine.

SC support told me that after thousands of requests for a tool shed, they have acted... It's probably not the tool shed you had in mind though!

They introduced it in the last upgrade. How it works is if you use diamonds to buy barn or silo expansion materials via the expansion tab in barn or silo, all items of that type become there to use to upgrade but take up no barn space. So say you had 39 screws and needed 40 to upgrade, and clicked the diamond button on second silo tab to buy the one extra screw. That screw PLUS the 39 you had come out of your barn and are replaced by a green tick next to the screws in the silo upgrade tab.

So that's really only useful if, for instance, you hardly ever got screws but happened to have a lucky find in DD and suddenly have most of what would otherwise take ages to gather, but the barn is nearly full now and you don't want to sell precious expansion material to make space while you hunt up the more common (for you) panels and nails.

I went and checked Nick's list of all the things that occured in the update, and this wasn't listed. I don't choose to try it out right now because I still need 8 planks (64 diamonds--too many). However, Cowslips confirmed that it worked!!

I think that this is the start of a good solution to the neverending "tool shed" problem. I'd love to see SC take it a bit further...

Once you get the green tick mark indicating that you have enough of a particular item, a little tool shed icon appears with the 1-diamond cost option. You can store those items. In my current situation, I could store 52 bolts and 52 tape. The surplus bolts and tape could not be stored. I would have had to do all the work (or spend the diamonds) to get the total number of each item needed. My barn would still contain all the materials that I was working to collect, so there would still be the everyday dynamics of "full barn" as drops occur.

The toolshed could be a building over by the NH house and train platform that you tap to see what's inside. It would not have to be a building like the barn and silo that you can manipulate.

I've upgraded my barn recently and had green marks on planks and duct tape for a long time. Haven't seen any 1 diamond toolshed icon with the green marks, so for me it was the same as always.

Sorry my post was confusing. The only thing that has reportedly changed is what is in bold red type. The other stuff is my suggestion for further refinements.

I asked support why this wasn't announced and they said they said they didn't know, I found it by accident (doing exactly as in the example, buying a tiny number of rarest to me sem) and I thought I had a bug on farm when all the screws vanished, and after reporting it was then they explained it was a deliberate change made in the update, and they connected to requests for tool sheds.

As I said, probably not the toolshed anyone wanted, as while it frees up barn space it means you could never give a close friend or family member a purchased sem or bem (or any of the ones of that kind you had before purchasing).

So use diamonds to buy the needed expansion item to get more space in barn? Interesting. I guess it's useful for people who like throwing diamonds in SC's direction.

I'll just expand and manage my barn the old fashioned way.

I'm still not 100% clear on what it is that's supposed to happen...?

When you use diamonds to buy a bem or sem via the barn or silo expansion tab all of the ones of that specific kind (the ones you had before plus the extra purchased) vanish into no-barn-space land, inaccessible for anything except you expanding that building, and taking up no barn space (so freeing however much space that item took up before the purchase, so 39 spaces in the example). What you get instead is just the green check mark next to that item in the upgrade tab, as opposed to it saying, say, 40/40 with the tick.

From what I understand:

I have 30 screws (for example). I need 5 more. I use my diamonds to get those 5. 35 screws are now stored elsewhere. They're not in my barn. I can't do anything else with them but use them for my silo. I can't sell them, as I don't have access to them in my barn. I can only use them in a silo upgrade but they are stored in an imaginary tool shed we can't see.

Did I get it right Tomville?

Oh and to answer MiniG: no, I only heard of it the other day from another one of Tomville's posts.

Okay...but in the example above, if you only need 5 more screws, and you buy them with diamonds... You have just paid the diamonds to expand your barn, right?

I would expect the screws to vanish, along with the other materials needed to upgrade.

What am I missing?

Using ILHD's example:

35 panels, 35 nails, 35 screws needed to upgrade.

She has 30 screws, 0 nails, 0 panels. She decides to buy 5 screws to complete her 35 screws. Those 35 screws will be checked off but won't be counted in the barn. She's essentially using 8 diamonds x 5 = 40 diamonds to buy barn relief for 35 space. She still needs nails and panels to upgrade.

This is bonkers. It sounds like a scam to get us to use more diamonds.

It's irritating is what it is. I can't buy planks or tape or other expanison items with diamonds and give them away anymore.

Pictures or it didn't happen. Actually a YouTube video would be even better. It's not something I would use, though.

I guess it's only really worth it if u need one more of an expansion item and the number is high enough to give u that relief. I currently need 2 more tapes to be able to buy the last one for 8 diamonds to give me 205 extra spaces. Is it worth it? I've been managing my barn just fine without it so for me, no. It's all subjective.

Thanks for the pictures tao! I wouldn't do it either, I'd just sell stuff to make room if I needed the extra space, like I've always done. I like to hoard, unload and make/buy the products again lol.

I haven't tried to do this yet. OK say I need 96 of each bem. I have 95 tape. I spend 8 diamonds for the last tape. I gain 96 barn spaces. Then get 2 tapes from town. Does the 2 tape get added to the total number of stored tape or can I sell it or use it for town or does it not count at all.
Also I would like to know if this will work for the tackle box and the town buildings.
I will try this and post my results.

I like this change. I won't use it, but it amuses me to see how they resolved this request.

Oh!!! But what is the point in all that. Spend diamonds. Free up a bit if space or hey just clear out some junk from the barn.

They took a great idea and turned it into a ♥♥♥♥♥♥cell $money$ $making$ $opportunity$.

I just tried this for tackle box and it works. I had 10 nails and bought 11th one with diamonds. The green check mark is still there but not the 11 nails pic. Then I bought 2 more nails from the paper. My barn now says I have 2 nails. So it works for the tackle box. I'm still not sure about the town buildings. Also does anyone know if this works for land expansion items.

Well I did say it wasn't the kind of tool shed many might have wanted... Use diamonds plus cannot gift anything of it. Mmm no, not really useful; I am with XYZZY thinking it more amusing than anything.

I hadn't heard about it either. Good for some I guess, but it seems like an expensive way to get a bit of storage for a short while. I won't use it as I don't use diamonds to play (only deco, lots for deco).

The original idea was great, but of course SC turned it into a diamond grab - surprise, surprise.

I can't understand why this wasn't made a huge deal of in the last update though. It's not like them to be coy over a new diamond grabbing feature?!

Reading this thread, my first reaction was: "no, I don't think I'll be using this."

But then I realized that - just this morning - I'd contemplated using diamonds to open up more slots in my smelter to deposit some ore and create some space in my barn. Maybe spending diamonds to remove the completed quota of an expansion material from our barns is not so philosophically different.

The only considerations holding me back are:

1/ I've expanded my barn/silo without trading and without spending diamonds on expansion. At this point, it brings me a little bit of game-pride that I've been able to accomplish that. :smirk: But maybe that "achievement :p" isn't really worth holding on to, and I could adjust.

2/ Opening up extra production slots with diamonds makes those extra slots available for perpetuity. Spending diamonds for expansions would be a one-time use each time.

yup... Like in Haystacker's pictures... Personally I'd have dumped 600 or so pickaxes and 300 or so shovels. But to each their own on how they achieve expan$ion$.

I can't say I'll be likely to ever use the feature, but it didn't cost us anything for them to implement it. I can see the value of it in certain situations.

I think it is completely philosophically different. But you already stated the reasons: one gives you a temporary benefit, the other is permanent.

I think this new feature has more in common with spending diamonds to speed up production or ripening of fruit. It's a feature for those whose impatience is greater than their wallet. And that's fine: they keep the servers running for me.

What I find bizarre about this feature is that not only was it not well announced, but it's almost completely undiscoverable: you won't know where to look for it. And those who do by EMs that way probably wont even notice what happened to the barn space.

Your point #2 in combination with mining with "barn full" will achieve almost the same amount of free space in your barn. And as you point out you can do this over and over again with only having had to spend the diamonds once. Obviously it will depend on how many smelters / slots you have on each. I usually mine with 50-60 spaces open in my barn. Once I reach the alert you have to pick up before you can continue, I just fill up all the smelters. Between the ore and the used tools I repeatedly end up with 100 spaces in the barn and a bunch of ore in "free storage" in front of the mine.

First of all, thank you MiniGardener for the PSA by alerting us to this new feature. Thank you taoyingying for demonstrating it and posting screen shots. Now I have a better understanding. :)

The new feature is a variation of an idea which was requested by the community but was listed in the ruled out thread started by former Mod Cricks3. I'm speculating this new feature wasn't highlighted by Team Hay Day because they don't want us to know that they have created a new revenue stream. Since there's no way to spin the new feature in a positive light, it was introduced without any fanfare with the recent update.

Kudos to Team Hay Day and your entrepreneurial spirit. We would've missed it were it not for the eagle eyes of MiniGardener.

The NH trading box turns out to be a donation box. The apparent tool shed turns out to be this. We ordered 2 eggs sunny side up and we got 3 eggs scrambled. Kudos Team Hay Day.

Not disclosing this feature isn't exactly the best way to get players to contribute to the revenue stream. Tomville initially thought it was a glitch after stumbling on it. Several others tried it only after reading about it. No one knew about it. Logically, full disclosure would net them a lot more. A question for Nick when he returns.

There's something about the Supercell culture which thinks they are giving us what we want but the end product isn't what we envisioned originally, IMO.

Personally I am going with the philosophy that this "feature" wasn't planned at all despite what "Support" said. How many times has "Support" been totally clueless about anything to do with the game. And y'all think that mysteriously this time "Support" knew about this hidden feature to tell Tomville about it? More likely they had no explanation so went with the easy answer "we brought it in with the latest update". Far better from a PR point of view than to have to tell players they busted something else in the update, no?

There is a big positive to this, it would stop some particular forms of cheating and exploitation, which is something I am sure we would all like to see. That to me is more important than my amusement at my new "no barn space" home for those screws.

U might be right...that's one quick thinking support specialist if that's true. A feature this important as to be compared to the long requested tool shed would surely be flaunted by SC as a major achievement, not hidden away in secrecy. How would people even know to make good use of it if it's not even revealed? Doesn't make much sense.

Another theory: Nick simply forgot about including it in the sneak peeks. Entirely possible.

Side note: why even bother with support? Seems like it's horror story after horror story for some of u. No answer from them ever seem to be satisfactory.

While indeed it could be a method to prevent certain exploits/cheating, that goal would still be accomplished even with telling us all about it. Plus telling us would have the added bonus of spurring more spending.

Yes, I suppose it is a matter of reference and scale. A crow is totally different from a cow. Eating crow and eating cow are pretty different. :smirk: But a crow and a cow are not as different in degree from each other as they both are from an induction oven.

It would cost me 15 diamonds to open up an additional mining slot to hold 3 ore for several hours. It would free up 3 spots in my barn.

Right now, most of the time, I don't use all my available mining slots. So that extra fifth slot would probably be used sporadically - when I do a derby mining task... maybe once a week. :confused:

If I waited until I had 79/80 nails and paid 8 diamonds to top off that last silo EM, that would free up 80 barn spots. Only a one-time use, but 80 free spots might make still make a big impact for me. Especially if I'm "hoarding" stuff temporarily as prep for a few boat tasks, and I can't really sell/use up many of my wares.

I still don't know if I'll use this feature. I guess when I'm feeling crushed by the unbearable weight of fully-stocked barn, I'll see what I'll do.

:eek: That would be nuts if this were an unintentional feature... a glitch even.

That would mean, one random day, they might shut down the servers for "maintenance" to "fix" this glitch. Maybe everyone would get 2 or 3 diamonds for the inconvenience. But what if everyone who used this feature would "lose" all their saved EMs? And then - like a lost/glitched derby task - all Support could do is say that such things never happen and that it's all the users' fault and have a hayppy day. :(

For the first time in my experience, the DD "Daily Deal" actually is a good deal. I am always hyper-sensitive to the appearance of a plank, and that is what is offered today in the daily deal. The ad is "5 planks for 28 diamonds". That is discounted from the usual price of 40 diamonds. If one were in need of 5 planks for a barn expansion, the price would be 40 diamonds since each plank "costs" 8 diamonds. I wonder if buying those 5 planks through the daily deal rather than tapping the icon in the barn expansion window would clear them from the barn. It would obviously cost fewer diamonds, but if the goal were to clear space in the barn, it might not work.

Hmmm, MiniGardener, I wonder what would happen. One possibility is that, because you're not buying them whilst you are in the barn, it would just add them to your total stock held, and not reduce barn stock.

Of course, if the offer left you short by one, you could buy that one in the barn and then it would work, I think.

I'm cautiously liking the change. I have now 'banked' one item in my barn and one in my silo. That's around 200 spaces saved. Each time I bought only one item; I can't see myself using more than the 8 diamonds that takes.

I'm trying to see if it has any effect on drop rates - the more you have, the more you get - but it's too soon to get the feel of that yet. I don't overanalyse, though, so I may never know!

I've done the DD deal before when tired and impatient. I'd suspect they just go as items into the barn still.

I've also done the 8 diamond expansion barn saving "new feature", and have to admit I don't think I'll do it again. Mostly because when you normally upgrade the barn or silo, you achieve a very large chunk of free space. Spreading the upgrade out over the days it might take to get the 3rd item, makes it somewhat anti-climactic. Plus by then you have filled the little space you gained temporarily.
