I have definitely seen the old 320 "old school" town task you mention so it's absolutely still there... Presumably given the wider range of tasks now it just doesn't come up as much?

We don't mind the new town task. We coordinate so the one who has the most of the required townie takes it and the others release the townies required for the task as soon as we can. We all have our personal trains down to an hour and a half and that helps with picking up the ones that are available.
You are SO correct. This new task stinks big time. I love the folks who say its OK because it doesn't expire! Great, so we spend all week trying to get one task done! Last week the old 320 train task came up multiple times. Its now Thursday, and it hasn't popped up even once, but the new Creepy Character task has come up over and over and over and .....
If this task-from-hell is going to stay it needs SERIOUS revamping. Don't you guys actually test anyof this stuff before you dump it on us, your customers?
I am currently on this task and frustrated. It's serving the local guy with orange hair. I've used gems to bring in 2 trains and not a single guy was on either of them.
I happen to like the new task....perhaps it's just the way I play the game and center it around the derby tasks. It really isn't that bad. May have to change your gameplay some.
It took me about 15 hours to serve 9/12 teachers -- maybe less because I slept in there, and when I woke up 4 were ready and the task was done.
The worst part of this task was having to set free the 23 served townies I had stacked, and there was 1 teacher in those. One! GRRRR! But I did it because I wanted to try something new, and see if I could find a way to make this task work for my game.
Is this the blazing-fast 320 DPs/23 townies task we all prepare for, wait for, and love when it pops up?? No. It's not something you can prepare all the way for in advance, and just pick 'em up and move on to the next Derby task.
The specific townie task IS a challenge. It IS a new derby task. It IS something new to do in the town, and it IS achievable in less time than it takes to do some other production or crop tasks. All these things were asked for repeatedly in this update.
Others have rightly pointed out that being in a large NH helps, and having a fully-expanded personal train helps (for maintenance time, not so much for seats). So does having all the machines and products available at your level (an issue for me with tea house and taco stuff while the machines build).
But I was able to complete my teacher task in a reasonable time without a lot of angst by varying my play in a couple of ways:
(1) I Got a Little Help From My Friends: By concentrating on teachers not townies. I used my PT once to pick up 1 teacher, twice to pick up 2, and once to pick up THREE!! Wooo hooo jackpot of educators!! I had 3 teachers in town already, so that's more than I needed for the task. I am not including 3 I pitched from my Eggspress train for wanting 3 buildings and asking for tea and taco things I could not make yet while my machines are building.
(2) I Saw the Light: The way to do the specific townie task is to concentrate on single-stop selected townies.
(3) To Everything (Turn Turn Turn) There Is a Season: I filled my first PTs with as many townies as I could plus the selected teachers, BUT I only SERVED the teachers. This let me pile up salesmen and actresses and ladies and Cowboys. I'll do the next specific character task wih a stable of that character already in town, ready to be selected.
BIG CAVEAT: I do have a fully expanded town hall and personal train, but I don't play the town that much. Mostly I hoard 1-stop served townies for the 320DP/23 townie task and I kick all my Eggspress train visitors out empty handed a few times a day for my neighbors to pick up. So my method won't work for someone who plays the town a lot or who plays it differently from me.
So -- just play with this task if it interests you, trash it if it doesn't. The 320DP/23 townies tasks will come along.
For my game I think I will get ready to do a few of these specific townie tasks for the next derby and see how my plan holds up. :)
With a little strategy the new tasks are entirely possible, I was able to complete 4 during the derby and one of them only took 3 hrs
