If you're playing at a high level, facing TH10's with Inferno Towers (I play at 2900 trophs) Hogs are indeed much more effective than Dragons -- as well as other "big troops" like Pekkas and Golems. The reason is simple: big troops don't do well against Infernos.
I am th 8 and am an avid user of dragons since late TH 7 (nearly TH 9 now)
My hogs are currently lvl 3 and are nearing 4 (8 days to go)
I completed all DE upgrades (BK) included as a TH 8
but....
Judging by the upgrades I have left I will probably have to forgo several elixir troops. Namely Pekkas, Wizards, Goblins, and possibly Balloons (depending on much time I spend on collectors). I will be able to squeeze in healers, healing spell, and a rage (to max) - the upgrade times are ridiculous
BUT as someone how is currently really enjoying hogs I'd have to say Hogs (mass) > dragons
Hogs hit hard and fast. They also are pretty balanced as fair as weaknesses to towers. Big enough that splash isn't terrible but also small enough that an inferno doesn't chew them to pieces.
Up to probably Crystal III dragons are wonderful as people have a tendency to put them last in their upgrade list. Also many people point those accursed X-bows down. This means you have a host of poor air-defenses to attack
I am now just pushing past 2100 and the number of bases with poor air defenses is much lower. To make matters worse those x-bows don't tend to be pointed down half as much. And then there is the little tomb-stones to a mass dragon assault - infernos. With my hog attacks I find these factors less distressing
For those that complain about the large amount of DE used to upgrade as well as to train they just haven't ventured high enough in trophies or are low TH levels (TH8 or less). At around master level I am having a much harder time accumulating elixir and have excess amounts of DE. Why? Because if you're trophy hunting you just cant afford to have your Heros down for lengthy upgrades. And if you're at high trophy levels your reg troops should all be almost maxxed anyway. I am not a gemmer so since the update I have been concentrating on getting my hogs to level 5 exclusively. To help me gain trophies as well I have recently left my DE jar vulnerable for those willing to sacrifice trophies to hunt DE. If it takes me 2 hours+ in order to do 1 attack i'm willing to sacrifice 2-3K DE to a defensive win. Hopefully the hogs don't get nerfed like the witch.
Hogs are vulnerable to spring traps and bombs, they don't target Heroes and CC troops until defensive buildings present. Dragons win in this department i think.
Balloons and minions FTW, anyway :)
Hogs alone aren't enough. Hogs plus wizards make the perfect combo for leagues between crystal3 to master1.
(Regarding maxed army camps and without clan castle)32 hog riders and 20wizards do a great deal of damage.
Deploy hogs and wait for them to finish defences in a medium area n then deploy wizards to mop up the remaining buildings giving you a 1star garunteed and a 2 star probably with 3 stars rarely.
This is a similar combo to the giant and archer army or the balloon and minion army.
I have gained 150+ trophies with it.
