I would love to buy gems to speed things up, but nah!

Rushing to TH9 is actually very easy; I recommend it to any new player wants to advance quickly and is willing to put in a little effort to do it. That said....
I also tell everyone that once you reach TH9 this game changes dramatically (as you'be already seen). The sheer cost of upgrades is more than a little daunting and you really have to decide if you're going to be a long time player or someone who just play for the fun and on occasion. It's tough, especially if the hook's set. A lot of people don't fully appreciate the difference between the lower THs and what happens at TH9 and above.
Rushing TH9 is really no different than any other TH level. Once you have everything bought and upgraded, all key troops upgraded, then you can move up and be successful. Again - this is because offense is king in this game. The only question is at what point to pause to catch defense up a bit? For me, it's the odd numbered TH levels. For others, it's TH10. I have two TH9 games I am working on right now; one will be fully maxed and stay TH9 while the other will rush TH10 here soon.
In any case, I am not a big proponent of walls. Walls are easily defeated; we have troops that can go under, shoot over, and jump over walls not to mention EQ and jump spells which render them pointless. Once you have Legos, your walls are good to go to TH11 IMNSHO. I have a TH11 rushed game that defends just fine and has only level 6 walls. I see walls as something you max slowly at the end of the game.
My TH10 game has a mix of Lego and skull walls; eventually, I will make them all Lego before jumping to TH11. Right now, I am focused on getting the new TH10 items up to TH9 maxed levels, with some troop upgrades along the way. I'm off all of next week and plan on some marathon raiding sessions; I expect to be TH11 by month's end on that game.
If clan wars are not your priority and you are willing to invest the time raiding...you are overdue to upgrade to TH10. Maxing has its advantages, and for some it's just fun. But if the goal is rapid advancement...there's just no reason to wait. SuperCell eliminated any motivation to go through the game slowly when they killed resource retention in December. Like I've said - the game has always been about offense but with no resource retention, defense is just not very important anymore unless you are a heavy clan wars player and even then it has limited value. The way I figure it...until you hit the top TH level, everything lower is a build up.
Each to his own. I'm an adult who is 30 years into my chosen career; I can afford to put $30 into a hobby if I choose to do so and I don't mind giving SC a little money for their hard work. Anyone who cannot make a financial investment can still rush quite effectively; it will just be a little slower and you'll have to hold onto your gems for buying builders. This is absolutely critical to the long game - two builders simply isn't enough. By the time you get to TH7, you'll have earned enough gems through rewards and clearing your base to buy the fourth builder. It will take about 6 months to get there. Now, if you're REALLY active and you push trophies, you can get all three of the remaining builders by then too; it will take a lot of time investment because you'll have to trophy push way up the leagues to grab the bonuses, but it can be done. My time is too important to me, though; I'd rather just pony up the 30 bucks early on.
My Clash Maniac game has had no further investment beyond the seed money to kick it off. Every gem I've spent since then has been picked up in-game and that initial cache was gone by TH5. Once I get to TH9, I might toss another $20 into the game just to get gems for boosting barracks during marathon sessions; TH9+ is very different from the lower levels and since December, zero investment play at these levels has slowed down significantly. It takes longer to raid resources needed for upgrades (because everything is much more expensive) and you have to raid for longer periods to get upgrades started (no loot retention means you don't leave a lot in your storages).
Hey Noctaire et. al.,
I would quote what you have written but I fear that it will take up most of the screen if I do so, so I'll just reply like this. I agree that walls are overrated. EQ/Jump make them almost useless if placed properly. And reflecting on what you have written out and sin as well, I think I should have hopped over to TH10 sooner, the only thing holding me back were the royals, but I have just realized that it doesn't matter that much anyways since I have them pretty much upgrading all the time, or at least one, so it won't make a difference that much. Long story short, walls are only available to intimidate people and I wasted too much time doing them. The crappy attackers still go after bases with maxed defenses and crappy walls and fail attacks all the time. Every base I see who has a ton of defenses has lower level walls and pretty much maxed out defenses. I only get attacked by people who know what they're doing, thus it is almost a waste to max those intimidating walls.
Also, I don't do wars, as a matter of fact I really feel they're a nuisance. My clan I was in had a good social bunch of folk in there and I enjoyed being with them. The kicker was that they felt I shouldn't have gone to TH10 back when I wanted to before. They felt my heroes were too low and I should max walls and stuff, and yeah. I listened to them for a while but I am playing my own game, and pretty much am a hardcore farmer (400+ attacks per season), so I bailed on the clan and joined one off of these forums actually that are quite amazing. They don't care about wars really, and just do them for the loot, which is perfect for me, and they don't care about a whole lot except for your GG/attacks per season so that they know that you know what you're doing. It is a night and day difference on my experience of the game.
I guess what I am trying to write is that I really want to get to the end-game of this game, it would be a lot more fun then sitting 2 TH levels below the max, and I've been playing long enough that I could have easily been a TH11 by now. In fact, I bookmarked a clan that I have been following for a while. I was a TH7 and I got attacked by this one guy who was a TH8. He was what you would probably call a tactical rusher. Now he is TH11, with maxed defenses and high level royals, and lego walls and 30+ heroes and 20 GW...
I've got heroes in between 15-20, and no GW. I guess I've been playing the game wrong the whole time, because I listened to the wrong people.. lol. But hey.. at least I got half a base of lavas.. that means something.. right? :p
Markness: It's really not a matter of right or wrong; it's just playing style. Before the TH was given real value in the game, maxing was a solid strategy to get to the end game in a reasonable amount of time with minimal effort. Casual players were common and it was easy to play. The December update changed all that and it really didn't make any sense to follow the maxing route anymore unless you were OCD or just wanted to do it that way. Maxers are not playing to get to a maxed state quickly; and that's ok. The rest of us though.... :p
As you've said you want to get to the end-game quickly and you put in 10-15 raids each day, your playing style sounds like a good fit for rushing strategically. At TH10, I would work on getting those heroes up to 30/30 and bringing all of your offense/defense structures up to at least TH9 max. Get the important troops upgraded, upgrade your offense to TH10 levels, then pull the trigger on TH11 and start maxing it out. I'll be right there with you; as I mentioned, my main game should be headed to TH11 by month's end. My heroes will be lower (20/20) and walls will be Legos, but after what I've already experienced with a premie game at TH11, I'm quite comfortable with those levels.
I hate that you realised stuff before you rushed. I learned most of the things you said while rushing.
Pearls of knowledge:
1) Walls are useless and only are trophies for hardcore farmers. Legos have 50% the hp of magmas, yet 95% of the effectiveness/efficacy
2) Intimidation is pointless. People who touch you, know that they're taking you down. Strong defenses is directly proportional to stronger attackers.
3) The right clan makes the game more fun.
4) Heroes don't matter in farming. If you're farming, heroes should be upgrading all the time. Thus, you don't get to use them. And TH10 has much better DE
5) A strategic rusher always keeps all builders working and would reach maxed defensive TH11 much sooner. Hence, a rusher actually gets stronger defenses sooner than a maxer (but because strong defenses = strong attackers, oops ;) )
Yup, preach man! I couldn't agree more to your points. I have been messing around too long. I've checked out my clanmates who are th10 or th11 and most of them don't have a lot of the lab upgrades done, just the farming troops.. so I think they've been playing how you've been saying. My defenses do seem to attract the stronger attackers, so on my account that I am upgrading right now I'll play it casually and probably get 2 lavas a day still until the TH is ready. It is a sad day when you realize you could have been higher but held back for arbitrary reasons.. :(
Anywho, thanks for pointing out what I should have known. I am looking forward to TH10, especially because of that better DE you've been talking about.
Also, your clan have any room for a mini? I'll be playing that more than my main account until my TH10 upgrade is ready, then I'll go 50/50. On my mini I am hurting for CC troops as my missus only has farming troops unlocked on her account.. only level 1 hogs, and level 2 balloons.. :/
