I currently have 4 smelters, and I am level 48. Should I go ahead and get the 5th, or wait a while longer (I was just fine with 2, but I end up buying tons of extras in the paper.) Everything is unlocked, next unlock is Candy Machine at lvl 51.

Are you managing just fine with 4? If so, you don't need 5 right now. Get the 5th later if you want to. It really depends on your needs and playing strategies. Some players need 1 or 2, others need all 5 smelters. So if you're good with 4 smelters and need coins for that candy machine, I say save the coins for the candy machine. ;)
It depends..... Try to find mining stuff in the DD. Or try to find ore in the DD.....
If you have a neighbourhood which uses Tom or youself do use TOM then you could go for 5 melters ultimately.
I do use TOM and make lots of jewelry. The combination of both works with 5 melters.
I love the smelters! I bought all five as soon as I could, even against the advice of my mentor.:D Now my baby farm has all five and we keep ten running alla time. Those personal trains love those metal bars, and jewelry sales get you vouchers from trucks. Plus, the gift shop patrons like jewelry, too.
IIRC, I bought my 5th smelter as soon as I unlocked it because I constantly needed bars to upgrade my Personal Train so my smelters worked nonstop. Currrently, my smelters are working nonstop to supply bars to my Jeweler.
I suggest getting the last smelter if you play the town often or when you have excess coins. I used diamonds so I have 3 slots per smelter. Good luck.
I find all 5 worth it, with 2 slots each.
I have them all busy 90% of the time.
I, too, have all 5. Since there are 5 ores (or whatever they are called), I have one type in each smelter. I have two slots open in each, too. So I have a gold smelter, a silver smelter, etc. It works for me. But I only do the smelters when I have the mining task in the derby.
I'm level 90 and still have only 2 smelters (2 slots each).
As you already have 4 smelters, I would suggest to wait a little longer with the 5th. Save your money for the candy machine. If you have all machines you still can buy the last smelter.
Have fun farming!
I have all 5. They run non stop. I like being able to serve townies & do trucks without worrying whether I have enough bits of jewellery or not. I have all the slots too, but only because it's excellent storage!!
You are several levels away from the candy machine, plenty of time to save for that.ll
I have only three smelters at the moment. Might go for the others later, but for now I don't really think it's necessary.
If you are working on achievements, a 5th smelter will help you get the Helter Smelter III a little faster. I run 5 smelters with 3 slots on each. I find this works as I don't need to fill them but 1-2 times daily. I keep them going unless, I'm low on mining material.
After saying all that, if coin for your next machine is an issue, save for that first.
Do you have a lot of ore taking up space in your barn? If yes, then buy the smelter since it'll end up creating extra barn space by using up ore.
all of them, you only make one type of bars in each smelter.
so you can specifically collect which and how many you need

I have 3 smelters. I have 3 slots open in 2 of them and 2 slots open in the 3rd one. I run 2 silver and 1 gold in one, 2 platinum and 1 gold in the other (this equates to creating 2 of each bar between the 2 smelters), and in the final smelter with only 2 slots, most of the time it's 1 each of coal and iron. This has worked well for me as I don't tend to make and sell jewelry as many others do...I try to keep enough jewelry for truck orders only, so I can get the vouchers. I tend to sell extra ore when I mine so that I can continue picking it up while looking for those precious diamonds. ;)
I do this as well, and don't collect the bars till I need them. I can keep around 50 sitting on the machines and not in my barn. I do have at least 5 slots on silver, gold, iron, and coal....4 slots on platinum and 6 on the silver. My personal train is fully upgraded now. Get ore from derby tasks or friends/neighbors.
I have all 5 with all slots open. I can load them and ignore them for DAYS! Plus, I NEVER do bar truck orders. Why? They want too many per order and much fewer on jewelry orders. Okay, I have done a couple over the years because I had 20-30 gold bars.
But, I configure them differently from others. I have 2 silver, a gold, a platinum and one does alternately iron and coal because you need so much silver in jewelry.
Well what can I say....I do wheating and earn about 50000-75000coins everyday at level 36 so I didn't know how to use them...henceforth I was searching the store and saw I have to buy other 4 smelters.. I quickly bought all four at once...so no problem here...u can earn a lot or money everyday leading upto 250000 at level 60-75+....well my level is low and I think there is alot of time to go to lvl 51 yet so go for the 5th smelter...it won't hurt having an extra...o go for it...as it might take about a month to reach 51 but since in town I think u might unlock some builds there but let's see..go for it
I have all 5 smelters, each dedicated to one ore only.
I fill them with barn full, to prevent collecting the bars if I don't need them.
I find all 5 very useful. I also have all spaces purchased for each smelter. I like to fill them up and just let them pump out the bars. Extremely helpful for obtaining enough materials to produce the jewelry you need.
I have all 5 smelters because I dedicate 1 smelter to each of the 5 types of bars, silver, gold, platinum, iron and refined coal. This enables me to stack the bars on the smelters rather than taking up valuable space in my barn. Then when I need a certain type of bar, I can go directly to that smelter to get one.
