I didn't learn surgical until TH8, but I'd feel very comfortable running this strat at TH7, yes
th 7 only has 2 giant bombs against 3 heal spells, so you do the math. You can literally just roll your face through your screen deploying hogs and wreck a th 7 with lvl 2 hogs. If you are bored with mass drags attacks at th 7, then you can try hogs for a change
I tried this and 3 stared all layouts of my clan today at friendly challanges at first try. All except 2: a home made layout and "hall of hades".
I think this is a good strategy, but not against all layouts.
The home made layout had nice double bomb, wizard tower, skelletons and bb king placement. It was very difficult to 3 star.
As i said, it is a good strat. But i am not confident to try at clan wars yet. I think it's too dificult to predict when a layout will be strong against this.
Can you upload these bases? I'd like to see them.
Yes, this attack style/surgical, works against substantially all TH8 war bases.
I'm confused by this comment. You get to scout the bases before you attack and can easily get comfortable before you do anything. Further, as stated above, there aren't too many bases at TH8, like at all, that can stop this attack
I meant to say that sometimes it is difficult to predict where the skelletons and bobms are. I say that because it was the only explanation i found to why in most layouts my hogs and wizzards keeps alive and others don't.
Hall of hades is a layout of this forum, but it was not so difficult as this one. The other one is an unexpected home made layout of one of.my clanmates. Below there is a screen shot. It is not even a good layout and it should be very easy to hog. But it happens to be very difficult to me to 3 star it with this strategy.
Once it should be easy but it is not, i say it is difficult to predict.
Anywhay... I will keep praticing. Perhabs it is my fault. I was jus amazed how easy was to 3 star many of some good layouts and not this one.
Ps: i tried other variations of hogs attacks (even hognion) and all of them were able to easy 3 star this layout. Of course, I am more used to attack with those strategies, but i can't stop thinking you should worry sometimes with a possible DGB on your way or a tesla farm near a wizard tower and a GB).
By the way, among the 3 stared layouts with this strategy was rocke's drift (my favorite). So i need to say: it is a good strategy. I just still need to be convinced that it works perfectly against all layouts.

Thanks for the pic.
Yeah, just keep practicing this attack/surgical and you will easily get it.
On this base, the defenses are heavily grouped, so you'll likely group your hogs a lot more, especially in the 9:00 area, as a heal and a large group of hogs just blow torch that whole side. I'd likely bring a loon or two for the cannon at 12:00 to be funny. Further, as long as your hogs trip the DGB from the 5:00 side of the defenses, that DGB will likely pop one at a time. Lastly, with a base with defenses on teh edge, look to use BK as a distract, which can be very effective at protecting hogs coming in behind him
I've recently turned TH 8 and got my hogs to level 3 and I've been researching new war attacks as I've had enough with slow stupid drag attacks. I tried fish hogs as detailed here and from watching the videos. It worked great at first, barely even had to think about placement. But lately for some reason I've been struggling to 3-star other TH8's in war. I use 30 level 5 archers and 34 level 3 hogs, 3 level 4 heal spells and 1 level 1 poison. I get 5 max hogs in CC and another poison spell. The last two TH8 bases I attacked the hogs just didn't last. Both bases seemed doable and after watching the replays it just seems like I lost too many to DGB and spring traps. I'm not sure how to improve my play with this and it's frustrating to brag that you have an easy 3 star then it fails. Thankfully level 4 hogs are a few days away, I'm hoping that helps. Any other suggestions on how to improve my fish hogging?
Yep, after praticing a lot, i found that if you are a bad hog attacker, this strategy is great for you. If you are a very bad attacker and do not know how to use valks or pekkas, this is perfect for you. You will 3 star 80-90% of the layouts out there with lvl 4 hogs with no skill required.
But if you are an attacker that 3 stars 90-100% of the time in wars (my case)... well, you should keep to gohog/govaho/sirurgical, or any other variation, because this strategy brings good results, but it is not perfect and it will not work on some TH8 layouts with max defenses.
So my conclusion is: Yes, it is a valid strategy, but only for those that doesn't get better scores with other attacks. The best quality is that you don't need to adapt the strategy to every layout (you don't even has to think). The main problem is that you can't adapt the strategy to each layout (if you do so, it will not be fishing hog, but another strategy of the many hog attack variations).
One last thing: I found a few layouts almost invunerable to this attack (one of them i posted above) and found it is hard to identify this difficulty before attacking. That is also a problem. So... if you can identify what are the caracteristics that makes the layouts difficult to attack, this will maybe change the game in favor of this strategy.
