Just wanted to get some people's opinions on building xbows or not! I understand they will increase my war weight significantly. If you have gone the th 8.5 rout or have some experience and thoughts I would love to hear them.

Although i'm still a TH8 and there are plenty of people who could help you who know what they are talking about, i'd suggest waiting until heroes are 15/15 or 20/20 before building xbows.
How often do you war? If you just farm then build them. More people will skip your base if you have one or two X-bows. Not having any makes you a juicier target.
If your clan does war often, the x-bows will increase your war weight significantly. Unless your offensive units are upgraded fairly heavily wait until they are close to max for TH9.
General rule of thumb: If your Heroes are 10+ build away. The buff that X-bows just got in the last update make them more effective, so I say build them earlier than what the established "wisdom" was before.
I would get golems to level 4 and Hounds to level 2 and Queen to lvl 10 before building them, apart from that I'd say you're ready to go as you have a good level of troops to attack TH9s. :)Quote:

Good question. I see people rushing in maxing def and having really poor offence. This doesn't help in war at all.
My view is, you should always be able to 3 star your equivalent or better base. So if you don't have the troops to deal with th9 with xbows, then it's too early.
Generally getting heroes to 10/10 and having a solid 3 star troop combo maxed (like goho), is a good place to drop your xbows.

i usually tell my clan mates are upgrading to TH9 to wait until they have all the "new to TH9" defenses built and upgraded to at least th8 level, plus queen 10, and a solid army comp, such as previously mentioned, like GOHO. bows add allot of war weight, and if you build them you might as well focus on getting them maxxed asap it will add to the war weight, but it will deter farmers. GL!
Golden Rule for me, and as I instruct my clanmates:
--If you're clan (i.e. WAR clan) minded you will upgrade defenses in accordance with your attack skill.
I blew off 8.5 pretty early on, and built x-bows, but I held them at level 1 for my first 8 months (up until last week) at TH 9. All my troops were maxed, and I have all Lego walls. I can pretty confidently 3 star most opponents, and decided to upgrade.
tldr; if you can 3 star, with confidence, max defense TH 9s then you should be okay being a max defense TH9.
edit: for a while i saw x-bows as mostly a psychological defense, but after the march update they're actually worth the weight. IMO.
You should build Xbows as soon as the rest of your defenses are strong enough that the xbows will keep you from getting 3 starred in most wars. They aren't worth the weight if you are still going to get 3 starred regularly after building them. I'd say that means having all of your skull walls built and your other defenses at least to TH 8 level, with level 7 air def. And of course, you should be working on your heroes, hogs, loons, golems, and hounds during all of this so you can actually 3 star bases with Xbows by the time you are ready to build your own.
I agree with the previous post that said you should UG your Golem and Lava Hound to max first. I would also suggest looking at all your three star attack strategies, find the lowest common denominator troops/spells and UG those as well. You might consider bring all your newly gained TH9 defenses and walls up to TH8 max level first before building XBOWs.
I'm a TH8.5 now, been there for about four months. I'm in a clan that wars twice a week, with a wide mix of THs in our group. My TH8.5 has been three starred in war only three times - one of them being a TH10 bully attack. That being said, if I were in a Clan that has only TH9-10s in war, we would draw much stiffer competition and my base would have been rolled too many times to count. In my current situation, I'm not a liability to my clan and I can continue to UG all my troops and spells.
My recommendation is don't build the XBOWs until you are comfortable killing TH9 XBOW L1 bases.
