I'm currently lvl 48 with th 8 and my gold collectors are at lvl 7 (two at lvl 8) while my elixir collectors are all at lvl 5. My question is...is it worth it to upgrade collectors when a lot of those resources will be taken from raids and you could be using your builders for more "worthy" investments?

Yes, you definitely need to upgrade them.
Im a level 45, TH 8, and I have two level 10 gold mines, two level eight, and two level 6.
I also have all level 7 elix pumps.
They help me gain gold and elix so much.
It depends. Do you want to help the community out? If so, upgrade them, as that is how resources are introduced into the game. If you are only concerned with your own well being, you are right, don't waste builder time on them. I haven't upgraded my pumps past lvl7 and won't waste builder time on them. I have never had downtime for my builders and my base wouldn't be as powerful now if I had upgraded the mines/collectors.

nothing but greatness i recieve.
this is hardly the way to feed people. if u want to see how people getting fed over your res, put ur storages outside the walls.
the pumps are great, i have maxed them as first items, back on when i was like lvl 35-40.
each morning when i wake up i'm getting around 200k/200k from the pumps, its quite nice.
think about it - they create 3000elixir/gold an hour.
its nice amount for free workless res,
and also are great way to lvl up.
3000 per hour x 6 mines x 24 hours, = 432,000 per day! They will pay for themselves 100 times over. The sooner you upgrade them the better.
With three builders, I am able to keep them constantly working on upgrades, so using them to upgrade mines just seems like a waste of the builders time currently. My mines/collectors are 5/6 , i just find them to be a small boost in income.. I earn much much more from raiding. Eventually I will upgrade them, but not for a long time still.
My issues with upgrading past level 6 is, to go from 6 to max (11) takes 15 days of a builder's time. At level 6 I get 1300 per hour which is 200 shy of half the max level's rate.. So the time investment doesn't really seem anywhere close to worth it, unless you have nothing else to do.
Not only are you not upgrading something that could enhance your offense/defense you aren't even getting the resources for that upgrade time.
It is definitely worth it 100%. I'm lvl 70 with maxed collectors. I just recently upgraded them from 6 to max. I upgraded nothing else during this time, all builders on them. I see so much of an increase every time I play. The earlier you upgrade them, the more it pays off.

What I do is I only upgrade them as sort of a secondary option. For instance, if I've had no time to farm and my builder just finished I will put him on a resource collector. I don't find them extremely important for immediate upgrades but i see their use as sort of an upgrade... cushion to fall back on if I have been slack.

They actually affect your base lvl greatly although having no use for offense/defense. If u keep them low into th8/9 u will see the difference between urs the people around you. But they are useful for resource collection

Definitely worth it.... Not only will you wake up to free loot everyday,but, your defense is actually slightly stronger as well.
