How to know which attack strategy to use

Hi all! New to the forums so I hope I'm putting this in the right place.

I've recently started to war as a TH9. I'm not in a super serious war clan, so I think it'd be a good time to practice 3 star strategies.

There are two problems I've faced when trying to do these attacks. One is that I'm a rushed TH9 which puts me at a great disadvantage to begin with (I really wanted the AQ.....). Can't really do much about it except try to farm.
The other is that I'm never certain when to use what attack. I'm aware that, by TH9, there are a lot of possible attack strategies, like GoHo, GoVaHo, etc. Is there a guide somewhere or a general rule of thumb people use when deciding which to use?

And kind of related to that, I've watched a couple videos or heard from people that some bases are weak to air attacks or ground attacks or whatever. How do they know that? What about the base makes them say that?

Practice. You get to realize which bases are open to which attacks based on past experience.

Though watching youtube vids of some successful attack strats can help with the learning curve.

1.max your golems
2. Max your hogs
3. Run goho
4. Max your other troops. Then we can start talking about other three stars strats

You can't run 3 star strats without maxed troops

I would counter that last post and say that you can run 3 star attacks. To put that to a point I started a band new account rushed my town hall all the way to TH9 and pretty much forgot about all other upgrades. I then maxed my loons and unlocked hounds. Once that was done, I started running Queen POP and only Queen POP. It was overwhelming powerful. Next I upgraded hounds which allowed me to attack bases all over the field. I have zero dark troop upgrades besides hounds and use all my dark to upgrade heroes when I gain enough. Heroes aren't exactly needed for this attack either. If you are confused at what Queen POP is I have a whole thread on it, but rest assured my account runs Queen POP and only Queen POP and he has been a prefect streak for awhile now hitting any base he wants.

Rushing puts you behind the 8-ball and also turns your 3 star playbook into mush. This attack might be an answer for you until you can catch up to speed and branch out.

Sure, if you have queen pop down then you can pull it off with only two upgrades.. but you're still arguing for max troops against stronger bases and likely level 1 hounds against th8 ads
