New troop: Tormentor; New spell: Malice

Description:
Tormentors are vengeful spirits born through witchcraft using Dark Elixir and concentrated malice. They appear as heavily emaciated humanoids with a single eye, black skin, sharp claws, bandages around their legs and torn restraining jackets. They float a few feet above the ground, but can't fly and have the same movement limitations as other ground troops. Their main purpose in battle is to eliminate any troops that would stand in their way, and due to their immense hatred of everything alive they're very good at it.
Tormentors primarily attack by gathering their hatred in the palms of their hands, creating balls of evil energy to launch at their enemies, but they're not afraid to use their claws if given the opportunity.
If they fall in battle, Tormentors explode, flooding the nearby area with concentrated Malice that was keeping them manifest. It creeps into troops that step into this territory, making them more vicious in combat. Tormentors gain much more from Malice, and they are also healed by it.

Summary:

• Tormentors excel at killing other troops. When used correctly, they can easily wipe out any defenders, leaving the rest of your army free to deal with the defensive buildings.
• Tormentors will attack at range if able, but will attack in melee if an enemy gets close enough.
• A few Tormentors can easily overwhelm a lone Hero.
• They are an excellent Clan Castle troop to have when defending, as they can do a lot of damage to a poorly planned attack.
• Tormentors fight in 3 distinct phases based on their current health:
  
  • Phase 1: (100%-70%) Normal appearance, normal attack speed.
  • Phase 2: (70%-40%) Phase 2 Tormentors grow slightly bigger, they gain a yellow glow around their hands and attack twice as quickly (effectively doubling their original DPS).
  • Phase 3: (40%-0%) Phase 3 Tormentors grow even bigger and gain a bright yellow glow around their arms and hands. They attack twice as fast as Phase 2, but the damage of each attack is halved, and they will choose a random viable Preferred Target within their range for each individual attack. If no viable targets remain within range they will move to the nearest Preferred Target.
  
  
• When they die, Tormentors release the Malice that bound them as a spell (the spell level is equal to the Tormentor's level) that can be utilized by your army.

Offensive Strategy:

• Their primary role in battle is dispatching troops - deploy them in a small group and enjoy the carnage.
• Tormentors get angrier and deal more damage over time, so they don't usually require support when dealing with troops only - keep the rest of your army busy elsewhere while Tormentors kill the defenders.
• Due to their unique behavior, Tormentors will try to destroy any enemy Heroes on the battlefield once Clan Castle defenders are dead - plan your strategy and timing accordingly.
• Tormentors can be an asset even after they die - the Malice they release can help your troops with a critical push.
• Tormentors are much more effective in small groups. If one of them dies, the resulting Malice will make the rest much deadlier - always bring a few of them.

• Tormentors are great Clan Castle defenders - they can attack both Air and Ground units, and if your opponent forgets to take them into account (or doesn't account for them properly) they can do a lot of damage to his army.
• They are particularly vulnerable to the Poison Spell - if they're not lured out of it by accident, it will kill all of them simultaneously, without giving any of them a chance to benefit from Malice.

The Malice Spell

Summary:

• The Malice Spell is automatically summoned by a Tormentor upon his death. It can't be normally brewed or stored like other spells. However, it still requires a sufficiently advanced Dark Spell Factory to imbue the Tormentors with such ability.
• The Malice Spell does not stack with itself or with the Rage Spell - if Malice and Rage overlap, troops in this area will be affected by Rage only, except for Tormentors who will be affected by Malice only in such case.
• The Malice Spell has half the area of effect, benefit and duration of a Rage Spell of the same level.
• Tormentors gain 50% more benefit from Malice, and they are also healed by it. That's why they prefer Malice over Rage.

Tormentors have 2 ways to attack: either by using their claws to slash enemies, or by generating orbs of evil energy to launch at a distance.

When deployed, Tormentors will immediately approach and engage any enemy troops or heroes present on the battlefield. What makes them unique is the way they fight - a battle between an enemy and a Tormentor will progress through several phases:

Phase 1: (0-5 seconds, or >70% health, whichever comes first) The Tormentor attacks normally, once every 1.2 seconds doing normal attack damage.
Just to clarify, the seconds means the time it has been on the battle field, yes? If so what's the reason for it? Can't it just go through its phases based on health lost? Or is there a reason for it to need the timer. Also what is its health?

Phase 2: (5-15 seconds, or 40-70% health) The Tormentor becomes enraged, slightly increasing in size and doubling his attack speed.
Phase 3: (15-20 seconds, or <40% health) The Tormentor is furious, once again slightly increasing in size and doubling his attack speed, but at this point he's so out of control he will attack a random enemy within his range every 0.3 seconds.
Phase 4: (35 seconds, or 0% health) The Tormentor literally explodes from anger, damaging and knocking back any enemy caught in the blast, resetting any friendly Tormentors caught in the blast to Phase 2 (this does not heal them), and releasing the Malice spell equal to the Tormentor's level (with 50% reduced area) at ground zero.
How far is the knock back? 1-2 tiles? How much is the explosion damage? Is it based off his dps or separate damage not related to his dps?
If there are no enemy troops left, Tormentors will reset to Phase 1 and continue to fight buildings⁴ until killed.

The Malice spell

Malice is Rage's younger brother, brewed in the Dark Spell Factory and taking up 1 storage capacity, but it's only half as effective as a Rage spell of the same level. However, Tormentors gain additional 50% benefit from Malice, in addition to some health regeneration. As is the case with the Rage spell, any one unit can only be affected by one Malice at a time, and if they stand in both Malice and Rage, Rage will take priority, except with Tormentors who prefer Malice.
This part is a pretty iffy. This will pretty much make the Malice Spell really only viable if the player used tormentors. Even if the housing space is one. It feels like it would be a rage spell but only weaker and without rage spell's speed boost. Idk if this earns a spot in the game. This may not what you prefer, but you could make it so instead of an entirely new spell can make this work with just Rage Spells.

It's the time the Tormentor spends in active combat with his current preferred target. It can't rely on health alone because they're very hateful creatures and will destabilize no matter how much you physically heal them, but they can also use damage done to them to destabilize faster.

Not necessarily, you could use 2 Malice spells to make a different kind of Rage - one that has half the power, but lasts twice as long. This could actually be a great asset in some cases, even without Tormentors.

Yep, once they're done with CC troops Tormentors will go after the heroes. They really hate the Archer Queen, so they will target her first. But they won't progress through their Phases until they engage their current preferred target. And it does have the speed boost, it's just halved. Also edited to answer.

Well this is awkward, but that's the first time I hear about Libra, I had no idea it existed.
And frankly Tormentors are quite different - they simply hate other living beings and they become furious if they can't kill them fast enough, the primary factor of concern here is time, not health. And they're meant to murder heroes basically, they can't tank anything.

It's not the only difference. Malice still buffs any troop affected by it, and it has its uses even with other troops and tactics, Tormentors simply gain more from it.

The damage and the knock back are not very significant, since at this point the Tormentor is already one foot in the grave and it's his last-ditch effort to spite his enemies. (0 DPS, he's dead)

If there are no enemy troops left, Tormentors will reset to Phase 1 and continue to fight buildings⁴ until killed.

Great thread! There are some points I'd like to mention, though.

1) The malice spell seems completely unnecessary in every way.it's nothing more than a DPH steroid that just has an interaction with the tormentors.
2) In my opinion, the troop is overloaded (this doesn't mean I don't like the idea though :smirk:). It has a complex priority of favourite targets, attack phases, weaknesses to arrows, death features, interactions with that spell, ranged & melee attack options...
It's a bit too much, don't you think?
3) Following from my previous point, I suggest you changing your troop with the following adjustments:
- Remove the archer towers and x-bow priorities (OR switch it to just basic defence targeting)
- Make the malice spell more unique or remove it. Small changes can make big differences.
- I don't like the idea that he summons a spell when he dies (especially since you can carry 24 of those in battle). Death features can't be too complicated.
4) This would change the tormenter's behaviour completely but hear my out on this one. I suggest to change the troop to only melee, but make it an air troop. This gives him the ability to move over walls, while removeing the abvility to attack over walls (which won't be necessary anymore). The reason for this is that , first of all, it's a floating head. Secondly, the attack speed increase he gets from the phase mechanic would make more sense if he was melee. If you agree with this, you could also remove the arrow weakness (since now he is vulnerable to air defences).
5) Lastly, there are just some basic troop suggestion thread adjustments that I'd like you to make. Include level differences, upgrade details, DPH's,...
Artwork and attacking strategies aren't completely necessary, but we would like to see why this troop should be implemented.

Please note that these are just simply suggestions (and my opinion) and that you can do whatever you want.

For the most part I accept your critique, I'll work with that when I'm able.
But I can't make it an airborne melee-only troop, because it's nonsense - can you imagine a Barbarian King being attacked in melee but unable to fight back? Also it's simply not viable, it has no way to survive Air Defenses without a strategy involving destroying those ASAP, and it's not a good troop for such strategies. I'll try to think of something, we'll see where it takes us.

I have COMPLETELY redone the entire original suggestion keeping in mind the provided criticism.
It took a tremendous amount of time and effort, I hope it was worth it.

Im very impressed Dragura. THIS is one helluva a revision. There isn't much I can say or ask. I am left with two things.

Someone said it before, said that the unit is kind of "loaded" considering the amount, and complex nature of the Tormentor. The reason I bring it up is usually when I think of a new troop myself I ask... What will this troop do different, and what can it add to the game?

for example, Wizards and valks both do splash damage. However one is melee and the other ranged. They function differently too, and have their uses. I bring this up for a reason.

I love the idea of him going through phases, and getting progressively faster, and bigger.

Unlike some other troops who will only target cc troops when they get near, he will fly over walls just to get to them. Assuming the heroes are still alive he will go after them too. He has roughly a similar amount of health as a valk does, but will still need a lava hound to get through all that.

Anyways, aside from all that, I feel he would be tough to utilize with the way his preferred targets are set up especially when he hits stage 3. Personally I actually like how he does have an order of preferred targets instead of just one. He may just have too many of these preferred targets or needs a new set of preferred targets so he can be more versatile. However that's up to you to decide.

Now the second thing is just his malice spell. It's not exactly a spell so it could use a tweak for its name. It's a post Mortem effect given to other tormentors. Now I actually enjoy this also. Instead of a explosion of dmg, it's a post Mortem effect that affects other troops(tormentors) around it. It'd be more versatile if this effect wasn't just for other tormentors though, but that would make balancing this tough as hell.

Skilled players WILL bother giving him a go, because if you're not farming for loot, 2-3 Tormentors are much better at killing troops than 20-30 Archers, and they won't be one-shot by Cannons and Mortars.
As for Malice, it functions exactly like any other spell, except that it's summoned by a Tormentor upon his death. It's a spell as far as players are concerned.

Why would anyone use 20-30 archers on CC troops when you can use the poison spell? Or wizards depending on your strat. Depending on the troop Lure you need it'd be more efficient to lure out the troops with a single troop, drop the poison and be done with it. Plus a proper CC lure if you were to use archers invovles going to the corner of the map out of range of mortars.

Truth be told yes of course any player would try a new troop, but that doesn't speak for his versatility due to his preferred targets. You have to consider his health and where the CC is as well as the heroes. With those preferred targets he could go all over the base if the defender has it set like that. His health is just too low for that journey. He needs to be more than just a hero or troop killer.

You'd need more than one tormentor most of the time to take care of the CC troops otherwise the defenses focused on him would be like sending in a single giant to the first layer of wall.

As far as the spell goes, it's just a technicality thing. It works like a spell, but in the context of him dying calling it a spell feels wrong and just calling it an effect would just be better. Again it's just a technical thing. I do wanna restate that his Malice only affecting other tormentors just makes him less versatile.

Coding wise idk how'd you know that. Witches don't have a preferred target, and just summon a few skeles. Lava hounds go for air defenses and blow up into pups.

The Tormentor has many different preferred targets, phases (that he has different stats in), while also getting bigger and added with an affect like yellow glow and his malice ability.

All 3 troops mentioned have levels and health stats and such. It's these extra things he has that make him more complex.

Plus, in terms of complexity in his use, the witches and Hounds are more player accessible. It's a complex troop. Even though I like certain things about it, there just might be reasons why there isn't a troop as complex as this one in the game already.

Offensive Strategy:

• Their primary role in battle is dispatching troops - deploy them in a small group and enjoy the carnage.
• Tormentors get angrier and deal more damage over time, so they don't usually require support when dealing with troops only - keep the rest of your army busy elsewhere while Tormentors kill the defenders.
• Due to their unique behavior, Tormentors will try to destroy any enemy Heroes on the battlefield once Clan Castle defenders are dead - plan your strategy and timing accordingly.
• Tormentors can be an asset even after they die - the Malice they release can help your troops with a critical push.
• Tormentors are much more effective in small groups. If one of them dies, the resulting Malice will make the rest much deadlier - always bring a few of them.

The Malice Spell

---

Summary:

• The Malice Spell is automatically summoned by a Tormentor upon his death. It can't be normally brewed or stored like other spells. However, it still requires a sufficiently advanced Dark Spell Factory to imbue the Tormentors with such ability.
• The Malice Spell does not stack with itself or with the Rage Spell - if Malice and Rage overlap, troops in this area will be affected by Rage only, except for Tormentors who will be affected by Malice only in such case.
• The Malice Spell has half the area of effect, benefit and duration of a Rage Spell of the same level.
• Tormentors gain 50% more benefit from Malice, and they are also healed by it. That's why they prefer Malice over Rage.

I love these ideas! But my only question about the tormentor is: What strategy's could it be placed in ? so, i mean like when golem arrived you had gowipe .. Can you think of any here?

Granted, I'm not an expert in game coding, but I'm still convinced what I said is true. Witches and Hounds both summon many units on the battlefield, and every new unit has to be calculated, while a Tormentor is always one Tormentor, it's just his properties that change depending on his health.
I suggest we leave this argument alone until (if) we get input from someone who IS an actual programmer.

As for his usefulness on the battlefield, it's a very complex question. Sure, nothing is stopping you from using standard techniques with a Poison Spell. But luring CC troops to an area small enough to be covered by one Poison takes time. Killing them with Poison takes yet more time. And you need even MORE Poisons and time if it happens to be a Dragon or a Lava Hound. And once you've spent those Poisons and time you're not getting any extra benefit out of them.
If you had 2 Tormentors, however, once you've lured the CC troops just outside the outer walls, those 2 Tormentors would proceed to obliterate them, probably reaching Phase 2 or even 3 in the process, while you deploy Golems and the rest of your army to take care of the defenses. And you can use the spell capacity that would've been taken up by Poison(s) for some other spell(s), like Earthquake, or Rage, or Heal.

Now depending on the base layout the fate of the Tormentors after they've killed the CC troops can be very different, but without proper planning they will probably die on their way to engage Heroes, but even then they're not useless - there is now Malice where they fell, which can benefit any of your other troops that step in it.

And if you decide to go with the standard strategies, even a single Phase 3 Tormentor that has no CC troops, no Heroes and no Clan Castle to seek out becomes a violent storm of destruction, dealing up to 644 damage per second to defenses. This insane DPS capacity is exactly the reason Clan Castle is in his list of preferred targets, and the reason he can be a viable asset in many strategies with a little modification.

Someone after me asked the same question I asked. You didn't get to answer but I do wanna hear your thinking.

What kind of strategy would he be useful for? What kind of troop could he compliment or which ones you'd think hed do well with?

I will give this as an example cuz I use it frequently in wars.

GoVaHo is a strat that's goal is to get the Valks inside your opponents base, and trip the potential Double Giant bomb spots. Both Golems and Valks are Tanky and can handle the blasts. The golems the meat shield obviously, and the Valk the one who shines in close quarters.

Then after all that, you drop the Hogs and watch the defenses go down and your attack 3 star. (At least at TH8)

The above works cuz the troops worked together to do what the other cant.

So given that, what strat would the tormentors be suitable for?

I don't understand why you expect me to provide specific examples, I figured it was pretty much obvious how Tormentors should be used:

• Lure CC troops outside the walls by whatever means applicable
• Send in a Tormentor to engage the CC troops
• If the first Tormentor cannot survive this fight, send in a second one before the first one dies (Malice will significantly buff the second one)
• After the CC troops are dead, Tormentor(s) will go for Heroes (if any Tormentors are still alive, which they should be!)
• Operation "Hurricane":
  
  • Do whatever you can to support the Tormentor(s) advance and to keep them alive in Phase 2 or Phase 3 (Golems, Wizards and Hog Riders are best for this)
  • Tormentor(s) will engage Heroes while the rest of your army is free to deal with defensive buildings (Hog Riders will thank you for distracting an Archer Queen that would otherwise be shooting them! And for tripping any Giant Bombs that may be along the way!)
  • If the Heroes are far apart from each other you will need a second front of attack to distract the defenses near the other Hero to allow the Tormentor(s) to do his/their thing
  • With a bit of luck, Tormentor(s) should've taken enough damage to enter Phase 2 or Phase 3 during all of this. Now they will proceed to obliterate any building in their vicinity.
  
  
• Operation "Sacrifice":
  
  • Without any support Tormentor(s) will quickly die, but you can still utilize their Malice with your army, possibly sending another Tormentor with them to engage the Hero that could prove problematic for your advance. If this third Tormentor engages that Hero while standing in Malice it will be a quick battle.
  • Operation Sacrifice should always be your Plan B or even Plan C in case something goes terribly wrong!

I really don't think there are any specific strategies with Tormentors at their core - they're meant to be a tactical support troop with good cleanup capability. Or rather, there probably ARE some strategies you can create, but I will not do that for 2 reasons:

1) This troop is currently entirely theoretical, therefore anything about it can change at any moment. It's a waste of time to plan elaborate schemes with Tormentors because you can't even test them, and they're largely irrelevant to the game right now.
2) I don't have a lot of experience with advanced combat techniques. I did watch plenty of videos, but this hardly makes me an expert combatant.

If anyone wants to, feel free to come up with Tormentor strategies, but it's beyond me at the moment.

it sounds very complex, still a good idea though, but my one main concern is how low its train cost and research cost are. it is cheaper to get the Tormentor to full level than it is to get a valyrie to level 2.

I think it's time for a bump.

Very nice troop, art, description and details.
But in my opinion, since this troop targets clan castle troops first of all and gets a x 4 damage when on low health, a mass army of these (yep, players would use mass armies) would be super overpowered and nothing could counter them! Think that through and answer me.

Let me tell you what will happen if you try to use Tormentors only against a well-designed TH9 or above: They will all target the nearest Hero and try to reach him, being stuck on walls along the way, then at some point, before actually reaching the Hero they targeted, they will most likely lure out the CC, at which point they will forget about the Hero and start fighting the regular troops. Then they will target and engage the Hero(es), most likely having to breach a couple of walls in between them, then they will target the Clan Castle, and only after all that they will start targeting any of the defenses that were shooting them the entire time.

I seriously doubt 20-24 Tormentors can survive 30-50% of the base constantly shooting them, even with spells. There's a reason they have such a complicated targeting queue.

Phase 3 Tormentors were way over the top, so I brought them down a few notches. (They no longer have twice the DPS of Phase 2, it stays the same in Phase 3)

I think now it's actually a fairly balanced troop - not useless and not overpowered.
