Do you max everything before going to TH lvl9 or do you stick to certain defenses, troops etc. that have to be maxed before you, personally, upgrade your town hall?
For example: if my air defences and mortars are maxed, I upgrade my TH (just an example).
What should be maxed in your opinion before even thinking of upgrading your town hall to lvl9?
When upgrading to every new TH I just follow one rule. Upgrade the TH when
A) all walls have been upgraded to max
or
B) builders are about to run out of projects and will be idle if I do not up the TH
So far scenario A has driven the upgrade every time, but I think TH9 -> TH10 will change that.
I like to max absolutley everything :p

It took me a couple months to grind it all to get them all at lvl 8 but I'm very glad I did.
I upgraded everything minus 2 barracks (lvl 9) and 1 DE barrack (lvl 1). Everything else was maxed including walls.
I expect I'll want to max out everything, the only exceptions would be barracks and POSSIBLY some walls depending on how boring it gets doing them all.
If i maxed the defenses for a townhall i will upgrade the the townhall. (I don't care much about walls but i have a good amount of skull walls.)
Im currently in the process of maxing my TH8 before I go up to 9. All walls done, all elixir upgrades done just working on the defenses now. The main reason I am doing everything now is so my base can stand up better against attacks when I'm busy building all the new stuff that comes along plus also might as well do it now before I am subjected to a slightly harsher loot penalty.
You upgrade everything from th1-9, apart from dark elixir troops, maybe barracks and bk at th7.
Th9-10 is mostly not recommended until more people go th10 so you have an easier time. If anyone who hasn't gemmed more than 50$ is at th9 they won't yet have maxed heroes AND walls anyway, so they still have something to work on.
Well..
I maxed out my Dark Barracks, all my barracks are at lvl 9 (except one who is at lvl 10).
All the troops I use are upgraded to lvl 5 (I could still upgrade balloons, dragons and P.E.K.K.A).
For the rest all of my elixir-updates are maxed.
I guess I should hold off on updating town hall some more, untill my defense is better. I'll start on those walls today :)

I sure as hell would.
From TH7 onwards I would advice everyone to max first. Take advantage of loot penalties while you can.
Up to TH7 you can rush...having 4 barracks & army camps is essential.
Only exception would be dark elixir upgrades. It's not biggie if you leave some of those upgrades behind.
